About the role

You'll own how people experience Amplify Bloomington in person. You'll set the standard for what an Amplify event feels like, lead our signature and recurring events, and run Amplify Bloomington's event rental business end to end, from the first inquiry to the last guest out the door. Every event at The Mill shapes how founders, partners, and residents see Amplify and the city, and you'll be the person making sure each one lands.

About Amplify Bloomington & The Mill

Amplify Bloomington is an entrepreneurship-centric economic development nonprofit building an innovation economy where ambitious people can thrive without sacrificing connection. Our work spans entrepreneurship growth, placemaking, capital deployment, community activation, and ecosystem coordination.

Our home, The Mill, is Bloomington's hub for startups and creative work. Its event spaces host Amplify programming, community gatherings, and private and corporate rentals. Every event there shapes how founders, partners, and residents see Amplify and the city.

This is economic development with a soul: a place where innovation and inclusion go hand in hand, and where people don't just start something, they build something worth staying for.

What you’ll own

The role has three areas of ownership. Time split will shift with the event calendar.

  1. Event experience strategy (about 20%)
  • Define what an Amplify event feels like: standards for hospitality, programming quality, accessibility, and brand presence across every event we host or sponsor.
  • Build and maintain the annual event calendar, balancing mission programming with earned-revenue rentals in shared spaces.
  • Set goals and metrics for each event type (attendance, satisfaction, partner outcomes, revenue) and report results to leadership.
  • Create playbooks, run-of-show templates, vendor lists, and post-event debriefs so events can be repeated and improved.
  • Advise program leads across the organization on event design, even when they own the content.
  1. Amplify Bloomington events (about 40%)
  • Own planning and delivery of Amplify's events, including AMP Bloomington, AMP Monthly, Bloomington Breakfast Club, demo days, and partner convenings.
  • Manage budgets, timelines, venues, vendors, catering, AV, staffing, and volunteers.
  • Partner with program leads on speakers and content, and with marketing on promotion, registration, and storytelling.
  • Secure and steward event sponsors in coordination with leadership, including sponsor deliverables and recognition.
  • Lead day-of operations as the event's point person, and close out each event with a budget reconciliation and debrief.
  1. The Mill event sales product, from sale to day of execution (about 40%)
  • Own The Mill's event rental business as a product: packages, pricing, policies, availability rules, and revenue targets.
  • Manage the sales pipeline: respond to inquiries, give tours, write proposals, and close bookings.
  • Issue and manage contracts, deposits, invoicing, certificates of insurance, and payment collection with finance.
  • Plan each booked event with the client: floor plans, timelines, vendor coordination, and building and tenant logistics.
  • Staff and manage events on site, including setup, turnover, security, and client support.
  • Maintain the booking calendar and CRM, and track pipeline, conversion, utilization, and revenue.
  • Grow repeat and referral business with local companies, IU departments, nonprofits, and community groups.

Cross-functional work

  • Coordinate with facilities on space readiness, equipment, and maintenance needs.
  • Hire, schedule, and supervise event staff, contractors, and interns as needed.
  • Keep a clear line between mission-driven events and paid rentals when space is contested.

What you bring

  • 5+ years in event planning, venue management, or hospitality, including ownership of events from concept to close.
  • Direct experience selling event space or services: proposals, contracts, pricing, and closing.
  • Track record managing event budgets, vendors, and on-site teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with clients, partners, sponsors, and volunteers.
  • Organized under pressure, with sound judgment when plans change on the day.
  • Comfortable with booking and CRM tools, registration platforms, and shared project tools.
  • Available for evening and weekend events and able to lift up to 30 lbs for setup.

Paid, contract, and substantial volunteer or leadership experience all count.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a nonprofit, civic, university, or startup setting.
  • Experience growing earned revenue for a venue or program.
  • Relationships with Bloomington-area vendors, businesses, and IU.
  • Event certification (CMP, CSEP) or equivalent training.

If you meet most but not all of these, we'd still like to hear from you.

How we'll measure success

  • Rental revenue against target
  • Space utilization and pipeline conversion rate
  • Attendance and satisfaction against goals for each event type
  • Sponsor deliverables fulfilled as contracted
  • Every event closed out with a budget reconciliation and debrief within two weeks

How to apply

The process is a short application, a written screener of about 45 minutes, and one 45-minute interview for those shortlisted. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. If you need an accommodation at any stage, email [email protected].
