Position Summary

The University of New Mexico (UNM) is seeking an accomplished and strategic leader to serve as Executive Director of Campus Capital and Space Planning.

This is a high-impact executive role for a leader who can connect long-range vision with practical execution—bringing together capital planning, asset management, university planning, space utilization, data, and funding strategy into a cohesive institutional framework.

Reporting to the Vice President of Campus Environments and Services, the Executive Director will serve as a trusted advisor to University leadership and a key connector across academic, administrative, operational, and governmental partners. The successful candidate will help drive disciplined, data-informed decisions about where and how UNM invests its capital resources, while strengthening the systems and strategies that support long-term asset stewardship.

This role offers the opportunity to influence major institutional decisions, evolve campus planning practices, and help position UNM for long-term resilience, growth, and success.

What You’ll Lead

The Executive Director will:

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of UNM’s institutional capital strategy, aligning investment priorities with University goals, financial capacity, regulatory requirements, and long-term objectives.
  • Direct the University’s Asset Management Program, including facility condition assessment, asset lifecycle planning, deferred maintenance strategies, infrastructure renewal, and capital investment prioritization.
  • Provide strategic oversight of capital planning, campus and space planning, land use, infrastructure planning, and long-range campus development.
  • Establish portfolio-level strategies, governance structures, performance measures, and reporting frameworks to strengthen decision-making, accountability, and funding advocacy.
  • Advise University leadership on capital investments, project prioritization, funding strategies, risk, trade-offs, and long-range infrastructure needs.
  • Provide executive leadership to managers and functional leads responsible for capital planning, asset management, project intake, space planning, data analytics, and decision-support functions.
  • Lead complex, cross-functional initiatives involving University departments, executive leadership, external partners, and governmental agencies.
  • Serve as a principal liaison and strategic advisor on capital strategy, asset stewardship, infrastructure investment, and institutional planning.
  • Coordinate with the UNM Board of Regents, New Mexico Higher Education Department, Legislative Finance Committee, State Board of Finance, and other external entities on capital priorities, funding requests, project status, and long-range planning.
  • Oversee capital planning data, forecasting models, analytics, GIS resources, and decision-support tools to promote transparency and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Participate in institutional policy development and strategic initiatives related to capital investment, infrastructure stewardship, sustainability, operational resilience, and long-range campus development.
  • Lead and develop personnel, including hiring, performance management, coaching, work allocation, and professional development.

See the Position Description for additional information.

Conditions of Employment

  • Employees in this job title are subject to the terms and conditions of an employment contract. Employment contracts are typically subject to review and renewal on an annual basis.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

We are seeking a leader who can see the big picture, navigate complexity, build strong partnerships, and turn strategy into action.

The ideal candidate will bring strong judgment, executive presence, and the ability to build trust across a large and diverse institution. They will be equally comfortable discussing long-range capital strategy with senior leadership, evaluating infrastructure risks and investment trade-offs, and working with technical and operational teams to move priorities forward.

Strong candidates will demonstrate:

  • Deep understanding of strategic campus development and institutional capital planning.
  • The ability to lead complex strategic planning processes across multiple stakeholders and functions.
  • Experience developing and implementing long-range operational, capacity, systems, and infrastructure plans.
  • Knowledge of capital expenditure budgeting and funding processes, particularly within public institutions.
  • Strong business, financial planning, and resource-management skills.
  • The ability to analyze complex data, evaluate alternatives, assess risk, and develop clear, actionable recommendations.
  • Experience improving systems, processes, governance structures, and organizational practices.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, including the ability to translate complex information for executive audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships across a diverse organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing professional staff and multidisciplinary teams.
