What they need
Exceptional food. Inspired teams. Hospitality without limits.
Great food starts with great leadership. We’re looking for an Executive Chef to lead The Big Group’s culinary operation within a corporate building, bringing creativity, consistency and a passion for quality to corporate dining, retail and events.
Supported by an Executive Sous Chef, you’ll lead the kitchen team, shape our menus and oversee the performance of a diverse hospitality operation. This is an opportunity to combine culinary ambition with strong commercial leadership, creating food that makes every experience memorable.
About Us:
At The Big Group, we are all about the essence of true hospitality, made for the 21st century. From sourcing ingredients, training our staff and curating the details, the great Art of Australian Hospitality is its ability to flex from formal to relaxed, ultra-contemporary to authentically multicultural, and to show everyone a good time.
When it comes to our team, Fun is Fundamental! We believe that a dynamic and enjoyable work environment is key to delivering exceptional service. Our team is passionate, energetic and dedicated to creating memorable experiences for our guests while having a great time doing it!
Our Venue:
Situated in the heart of Sydney's CBD, the Building is made up of two state of the art buildings operating under one roof. Within the operation The Big Group manages all the hospitality for 8,500 employees and across multiple floors of meeting rooms, large event spaces, café outlets and an Event Centre that caters up to 1000 people.
Our meeting room and client floors offer personalised high-touch service for meetings, executive dining and formal events. We operate a stunning 3 level, tech-advanced event centre, encompassing a 550 pax seated main area, pre-function areas, lounge, meeting rooms and an art gallery. Additionally, we have multiple café areas across different levels to service the internal client throughout the day.
Across the entire building, we offer a vast array of service styles and dining/menu options all produced onsite and led by an Executive Chef with a large focus on creativity, taste, local produce and nutrition.
Position Overview:
We are looking for an experienced Executive Chef to oversee the kitchen department, inclusive of a production kitchen, meeting room service kitchens, cafe and event space kitchens, all across different levels of the building. This is predominantly a Monday-Friday role, with flexibility to attend to events during evenings, nights, and weekends as required. This role has a hands-on approach, staying connected to service while giving the team the direction and support they need to succeed.
Main Duties:
- Leading and developing the team: Support your Executive Sous Chef and kitchen leaders to build a skilled, motivated team with a positive culture.
- Driving menu innovation: Create seasonal and bespoke menus that champion quality ingredients, nutrition and sustainability, aligned with Macquarie’s Awake, Sustain & Restore guidelines.
- Delivering consistent quality: Establish clear standards across menu development, sourcing, preparation and service.
- Managing financial performance: Take ownership of food and labour costs, purchasing, wastage and kitchen expenditure, supported by accurate costing and reporting.
- Building strong relationships: Work closely with suppliers, clients and our events and front-of-house teams to deliver cohesive hospitality experiences.
- Maintaining safe kitchen operations: Oversee food safety, allergen management and workplace safety, ensuring strong practices across the team.
Skills & Experience Required:
- At least 5 years experience in a kitchen leadership position.
- Exceptional leadership skills, ideally in catering and large-scale events.
- Experience in managing a multi-facet or multi-location operation.
- Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene and compliance standards.
- Complete understanding of food costing, labour budgets, allergen management and food safety, to maintain process and procedures.
- Strong technical cooking skills to produce various menus and cuisines.
