What they need
Company Overview:
As West Michigan’s only privately owned retina practice, Retina Specialists of Michigan is a rapidly growing retina-only medical practice with an expanding team of 10 physicians and over 100 employees committed to making a meaningful impact on the lives of those we serve. Our mission is anchored by five core values that guide our daily work and future growth: show respect, do the right thing, aim for excellence, be curious, and elevate each other.
Position Overview:
The Executive Director serves as RSM’s Integrator within the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS), translating organizational vision into aligned execution across the practice. Working as a true partner to the Visionary and Physician Partners, the Executive Director leads the Leadership Team, integrates major functions, establishes enterprise priorities and sequencing, and drives accountability for operating and financial results. Directors and managers own their departments and day-to-day execution; the Executive Director creates clarity, removes barriers, develops leaders, and ensures commitments become results. This role requires an executive who can build deep trust while maintaining high standards - equally comfortable coaching leaders, confronting difficult issues, making decisive calls, and aligning the organization around a common direction. The role protects RSM's mission of Restoring Lives Through Compassionate Care while strengthening the people, systems, and operating discipline required for long-term success.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead, Manage & Hold Accountable (LMA)
- Lead, manage, and hold Directors and assigned leaders accountable for functional results, people leadership, core processes, and commitments.
- Build a cohesive, high-performing Leadership Team that communicates directly, resolves conflict constructively, and puts RSM's greater good first.
- Set clear expectations and standards, develop leaders, address Right Person, Right Seat concerns promptly, and delegate without routinely taking work back.
Integrate the Organization
- Align priorities, decisions, resources, systems, and communication across clinical, patient-service, and business functions so RSM operates as one practice.
- Clarify ownership and decision rights, remove cross-functional barriers, and ensure leadership decisions are implemented consistently.
- Maintain organizational awareness and ensure core processes, policies, technology, compliance, and structures support reliable performance and an exceptional patient and team experience.
Deliver the Business Plan and P&L
- Translate the approved business plan into focused operating priorities, financial targets, and accountable functional plans.
- Lead budgeting and monitor financial and operating performance, identifying material gaps early and ensuring corrective action has a clear owner.
- Maintain executive oversight - through responsible leaders and advisors - of finance, revenue cycle, contracting, technology, facilities, workforce systems, risk, and other major business functions.
Drive EOS & Organizational Traction
- Partner with the Visionary/President to maintain a clear Vision/Traction Organizer (V/TO) and translate vision into annual goals, quarterly Rocks, measurable outcomes, and aligned functional plans.
- Lead the weekly Leadership Team L10; use the Scorecard, Issues List, IDS, Rocks, and To-Dos with discipline and close the loop on decisions and commitments.
- Own enterprise execution and priority sequencing after appropriate leadership input, optimizing for RSM as a whole rather than any single function.
Own Enterprise-Level Initiatives
- Maintain executive accountability for significant cross-functional initiatives - such as facility, technology, contracting, organizational, regulatory, or strategic projects - while delegating project-level work to the appropriate leaders and subject-matter experts.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent executive-level experience may be considered.
- At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare or a complex service organization, including responsibility for multiple functions and organizational results.
- Demonstrated success leading leaders, managing budgets and financial performance, overseeing contracts and vendors, and guiding organization-wide change or growth.
- Strong financial acumen, executive communication, negotiation, organizational judgment, and decision-making skills.
- Medical practice or physician-led organization experience preferred; direct EOS experience or comparable accountability-system experience preferred.
If you are a results-driven, collaborative leader with a strong background in healthcare executive leadership and a focus on operational excellence, we’d love to hear from you. Help us drive strategic growth and ensure the highest standards of care as we continue to expand. Apply today and join us on our exciting journey of success and impact!
