What they need
We are looking for a seasoned construction professional and business leader with wide and deep experience across the construction industry. The ideal candidate should have spent a significant part of his or her career managing construction projects and operations, but should have developed well beyond being simply a technical or project-management professional.
The individual should understand the full construction lifecycle — opportunity identification, estimating and tendering, design coordination, procurement, mobilisation, planning, project execution, cost management, subcontractor management, quality control, HSE, finishing, commissioning and handover.
More importantly, the person must be capable of building and growing a construction business
To provide strategic, commercial, and operational leadership for Stonegate Builders Limited, driving business growth, securing new construction projects, ensuring profitable project delivery, and building the organisation’s capacity for long-term growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Business Development
- Identify and pursue new construction and contracting opportunities.
- Build relationships with property developers, landowners, architects, consultants, corporate organisations, financial institutions, and government agencies.
- Develop and maintain a strong project pipeline.
- Convert business opportunities into profitable contracts.
- Construction & Project Delivery
- Provide executive oversight of construction projects from mobilisation through completion and handover.
- Ensure projects are delivered within agreed timelines, budgets, quality standards, and HSE requirements.
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, procurement teams, consultants, and subcontractors.
- Identify and resolve project challenges relating to cost, programme, quality, procurement, and contractor performance.
- Commercial & Financial Management
- Oversee project costing, estimating, tendering, pricing, BOQs, procurement, and contract administration.
- Monitor project cash flow, working capital, variations, claims, and cost-to-complete.
- Protect project margins and ensure overall profitability.
- Take increasing responsibility for the company's P&L.
- Leadership & Team Development
- Build and lead a high-performing construction and project management team.
- Recruit, develop, and manage project managers, construction managers, engineers, architects, quantity surveyors, procurement professionals, and site managers.
- Establish a culture of accountability, performance, quality, urgency, and continuous improvement.
- Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with approved budgets, procurement procedures, delegated authorities, internal controls, audit requirements, and HSE standards.
- Maintain strong oversight of contractor appointments, valuations, procurement expenditure, and project payments.
- Uphold high standards of integrity and corporate governance.
- Strategic Growth
- Strengthen Stonegate's market position and external client base.
- Improve construction processes, systems, and execution discipline.
- Introduce and utilise modern construction-management systems, including digital project reporting, cost-control systems, BIM/Revit, and project-planning tools where applicable.
Overall Mandate
We expect the right individual will probably have 15–20+ years of progressive experience within construction, contracting, real estate development, infrastructure or closely related sectors, including meaningful senior leadership experience.
We are deliberately not restricting this opportunity to people who currently carry the title of Managing Director. The right person may currently be an Executive Director, Construction Director, Operations Director, Projects Director, Commercial Director, General Manager, Regional/Country Head, or an experienced construction entrepreneur ready for a larger platform.
A degree or equivalent professional qualification in Civil Engineering, Building, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Architecture or a related discipline would be expected. Additional business or management qualifications would be advantageous, but demonstrated achievements, commercial capability and leadership will carry considerably more weight.
The Opportunity
The person joining Stonegate should see the Executive Director position as more than another senior management appointment. We are looking for someone with the capacity, ambition and leadership potential to ultimately become Managing Director and lead the next phase of the company's growth.
The progression to Managing Director will be based on demonstrated performance, leadership, business growth, successful project delivery, profitability, organisational development and alignment with the company's values and governance standards.
