What they need
Parents for Peace (P4P) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to prevent violence and help families address radicalization and extremism. Through our confidential helpline and specialized intervention services, we support individuals of concern and the family members, partners and others closest to them.
P4P is a non-clinical exit intervention provider with a clinically trained team. Our work focuses on coaching, psychoeducation, and connection; where clinical treatment is needed, we coordinate with appropriate providers rather than stand in for them.
We focus on behavior, not belief. Our role is to intervene in pathways toward violence and help individuals disengage from harmful or extremist behavior, not to determine what people are allowed to think.
About the Role
As an Exit Interventionist, your primary focus is to support and guide participants at Parents for Peace. Through techniques such as motivational interviewing and coaching, you will help address the concerning behaviors of a loved one. You may also work directly with individuals of concern. These interactions must remain compliant with relevant internal protocols. You will document your sessions using case notes and relevant screening tools. You will also work alongside your case’s assigned exit peer specialist to ensure the individual of concern is receiving the peer services they need.
Parents for Peace does not provide mental health services. Parents for Peace’s interventions focus on disengagement from violent extremist movements by developing strategies to address known risk factors. The techniques used during sessions include motivational interviewing, coaching, and referrals to external agencies.
Case Practice and Participant Support
- Support and guide intimate bystanders in addressing the concerning behaviors of a loved one. Support and guide the individual of concern, in line with Parents for Peace and scope of practice.
- Own assigned cases end to end, from the intake briefing through action planning, progress tracking, and the off-ramping recommendation.
- Explore the grievance, identity, and belonging needs behind an individual of concern’s engagement, and help connect them with prosocial alternatives.
- Document intervention sessions and interactions with intimate bystanders and individuals of concern.
- Collaborate with exit peer specialists to achieve desired participant outcomes
- Identify case coordination needs and work with the Helpline Care Coordinator on referrals and Resource Connection Documents.
- Facilitate one Parent for Peace support group (Orientation, Dads, or Intimate Bystander), as assigned.
- Attend relevant Parents for Peace team meetings, including weekly case consultation.
Working Within the Intervention Team
- Work closely with the other Exit Interventionists to keep caseloads balanced and support timely assignment of new intakes.
- Provide coverage on a colleague’s cases during leave, travel, or emergencies, relying on up-to-date shared documentation so families do not have to start over.
- Bring cases to peer review on a regular basis and offer constructive, structured feedback on colleagues’ cases.
- Co-facilitate sessions with a colleague on complex or higher-tier cases when a second perspective would strengthen the intervention.
- Share ideological, cultural, or linguistic expertise across the team, and contribute to internal resources such as ideology briefs, case examples, and training materials.
- Help onboard and mentor new team members, volunteers, and interns as the program grows.
Accountability and Performance Expectations
- Complete session notes within 24 hours of every session and update case progress tracking in the Case Tracker on the established cadence.
- Attend monthly one-to-one supervision with the Director of Intervention Services and participate in weekly case consultation.
- Document and communicate every escalation on the same day it is identified, in line with established escalation protocols.
- Administer and record screening tools and outcome measures as outlined in the Programs Handbook.
- Complete the Exit Interventionist Training modules during onboarding, followed by a probationary review and quarterly check-ins focused on caseload, documentation, and outcomes.
Additional Responsibilities
- When feasible, help deliver internal and external training related to Parents for Peace services.
- When feasible, support relevant initiatives related to grant objectives or philanthropic donations.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree or higher in relevant fields (Social work, Psychology, Counseling, etc.)
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Knowledge and understanding of radicalization and extremism (preferred)
- Experience working in a remote environment
Practical Details
- Working hours must be spread across the week rather than compressed into two or three days.
- The work involves regular exposure to distressing material, including extremist content, threats of violence and references to self-harm.
- The nature of the work requires maintaining strict confidentiality and appropriate handling of sensitive case and participant information in accordance with Parents for Peace policies and protocols.
- If you operate a private practice, it must remain fully separate from Parents for Peace. There may be no self-referrals or private work with Parents for Peace participants or families during or after their involvement with Parents for Peace.
