What they need
SET THE STANDARD. BUILD THE CULTURE. LEAD THE SITE.
NOW HIRING: SITE COORDINATORS
YMCA Expanded Learning
Ready to lead more than a classroom? You get to lead an entire program at a site.
Every afternoon, students walk into our programs looking for a place where they can connect, explore, play, learn, and belong.
Creating that kind of experience takes more than great activities.
It takes great leadership.
YMCA Expanded Learning is hiring Site Coordinators to lead school-based programs serving elementary and middle school students throughout the East Bay.
You’ll be responsible for the success of your assigned program site—from developing your team and strengthening program quality to building relationships with families and school partners and making sure the operation runs smoothly every day.
You’ll have real responsibility, real opportunities to make decisions, and real influence over the experience your students and team members have.
If you’re looking for your next opportunity to lead people, manage a program, and make an impact, this may be the role for you.

A YEAR-ROUND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
This is a full-time, year-round position that follows a combination of YMCA and school district calendars.
Most of your work will take place during the traditional school year, but our programs don’t stop growing when school is out.
Site Coordinators are also scheduled during select non-school periods, which typically include district professional development days, approximately one week of winter break programming, one week of spring break programming, and approximately 6–7 weeks of summer programming.
WHO WE ARE
At YMCA Expanded Learning, we believe every young person should have opportunities to discover who they are, develop their strengths, and reach their full potential.
We partner with schools throughout West Contra Costa and Oakland to provide before- and after-school programs that extend learning beyond the classroom.
Our programs elevate youth voice while giving students opportunities to build leadership skills, develop healthy habits, strengthen relationships, and discover new interests.
Our enrichment experiences center around:
- Physical Play — Move, play, collaborate, and build healthy habits
- Academic Achievement — Learn, practice, problem-solve, and build confidence
- Creative Curiosity — Create, experiment, imagine, and discover
But great programming starts with something even more important: A strong team with a strong leader.
That’s where you come in.
WHAT YOU’LL LEAD
As a Site Coordinator, you are the leader of your assigned school site.
Your job is to bring together people, programming, partnerships, and operations to create a program that works.
Some days that means coaching a team member through a challenge.
Other days it means meeting with a principal, reviewing attendance data, improving an activity, communicating with a family, adjusting staffing, preparing for an upcoming event, or jumping into program when your team needs you.
Leadership here is hands-on.
You’ll be expected to understand what’s happening throughout your site, identify what needs attention, and help your team continuously improve.
BUILD AND DEVELOP YOUR TEAM
Strong programs start with strong people.
You will:
- Lead, supervise, coach, and support your school-site team
- Set clear expectations for performance and professionalism
- Build a positive team culture centered on trust, accountability, communication, and growth
- Train and onboard new team members
- Observe staff during program and provide regular feedback
- Help team members strengthen their facilitation, behavior management, communication, and leadership skills
- Recognize strong performance and celebrate progress
- Address performance concerns directly, respectfully, and consistently
- Help team members understand not only what is expected, but why it matters
CREATE A GREAT STUDENT EXPERIENCE
Students should experience more than supervision when they come to our programs.
They should experience a program that is engaging, intentional, organized, and built around them.
You will:
- Oversee the daily student experience at your site
- Ensure programming is safe, welcoming, engaging, and developmentally appropriate
- Support your team in delivering high-quality enrichment activities
- Observe program activities and identify opportunities for improvement
- Use student interests and feedback to strengthen programming
- Help create an environment where students feel connected, challenged, and valued
- Ensure youth voice is reflected throughout the program experience
- Continuously look for ways to make the program better
RUN THE SITE
Leadership also means making sure the details get done.
You will:
- Oversee daily site operations
- Manage staffing, schedules, program resources, and site needs
- Monitor enrollment and attendance
- Maintain accurate program documentation and records
- Collect and review data to measure progress and identify areas for improvement
- Manage and coordinate site-level program budgets and resources
- Ensure required reports and administrative responsibilities are completed accurately and on time
- Maintain program compliance with YMCA, school district, and funding requirements
- Use technology and program-management systems to organize information and support operations
- Identify challenges early and work with program leadership to develop solutions
BUILD STRONG PARTNERSHIPS
Your program is part of a larger school community.
You will serve as a key YMCA representative at your assigned school and build productive relationships with the people who make the program possible.
You will:
- Develop strong partnerships with school administrators and staff
- Build trust with students and families
- Communicate regularly with school and YMCA leadership
- Collaborate with community partners and program providers
- Respond professionally to questions, concerns, and challenges
- Represent the YMCA with professionalism and follow-through
- Help families and school partners understand the value and goals of Expanded Learning
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We’re looking for someone who wants responsibility—not someone who needs every answer handed to them.
Someone who can build relationships while still holding expectations.
Someone who can give feedback and receive it.
Someone who can zoom out and think about the overall program while still noticing the details that determine whether the day runs well.
And someone who understands that leadership isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about being willing to learn, communicate, make decisions, take accountability, and keep moving the team forward.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 18 years of age or older
- At least 2 years of experience in youth development, education, recreation, Expanded Learning, childcare, or a related field
- At least 1 year of experience supervising staff or volunteers and/or managing programs
- 48 completed college units or a passing score on the Instructional Aide Exam
- We can support you with taking the exam if needed
- Ability to successfully clear DOJ/FBI background checks
- Ability to obtain CPR, First Aid, and AED certification within 30 days of hire
- Certification is provided at no cost to you
- Reliable transportation and ability to consistently travel to program sites, meetings, and trainings
- Ability to effectively use and learn technology required for the position, including Google Workspace, Airtable, Zoom, and other program-management systems
YOU MAY BE A GREAT FIT IF YOU…
- Lead from the front. You’re willing to step in, model expectations, and help when your team needs you.
- Take initiative. You notice what needs to happen and don’t always wait to be asked.
- Develop people. You enjoy helping others build skills, confidence, and leadership.
- Communicate clearly. You can set expectations, ask questions, give feedback, and navigate difficult conversations.
- Build trust. You understand that relationships are the foundation of strong teams and strong programs.
- Stay organized. You can manage multiple priorities without losing track of deadlines and commitments.
- Adapt. When plans change, you can adjust without losing sight of the goal.
- Stay curious. You’re willing to try new approaches and learn from what works—and what doesn’t.
- Practice self-awareness. You think about how your actions and communication affect others.
- Take accountability. You own your decisions, learn from mistakes, and focus on solutions.
- Believe people can grow. You approach students, team members, and yourself with a growth mindset.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described below represent those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to supervise and participate in program activities
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds
- Frequent standing, walking, and bending
- Ability to remain active and walk for extended periods
- Ability to effectively supervise activities in indoor and outdoor environments
- Mobility necessary to respond quickly and appropriately during emergencies
WHY YMCA EXPANDED LEARNING?
Because leadership here is visible.
You’ll see it when a new team member you coached becomes a confident facilitator.
You’ll see it when students start asking whether they can stay longer.
You’ll see it when a family knows your team by name.
You’ll see it when a school partner trusts you to solve a problem.
And you’ll see it when your program becomes a place where students and team members genuinely want to be.
You’ll also be building your own leadership experience—managing people, developing partnerships, overseeing operations, solving problems, and learning what it takes to lead a high-quality youth program.
Your site. Your team. Your opportunity to lead.
If you’re ready to take ownership, develop people, and build an Expanded Learning experience your school community can count on, we want to meet you.
