What they need

Experienced 1st Line IT Technician – Education

Location: Penwortham, Lancashire
Salary: Up to £28,000 per annum, depending on experience
Job type: Full-time, Permanent
Hours: Monday to Friday, normally 8:00am–4:00pm

Tel Group is looking for an experienced, technically capable and reliable 1st Line IT Technician to work full-time within a secondary school in the Penwortham area.

You will be employed by Tel Group but based at the school throughout the working week, providing day-to-day IT support to staff and pupils.

We are looking for someone who has previously worked in a busy IT support role and can confidently hit the ground running. Experience within a school or education environment would be beneficial, but this is not essential if you have suitable experience supporting users and technology within another business or organisation.

You will work alongside and under the guidance of an experienced Senior IT Technician, giving you the opportunity to expand your technical knowledge, take on more responsibility and continue developing your career. However, you must already have strong first-line support experience and be comfortable managing common IT issues independently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide responsive and professional 1st line IT support to staff and pupils.
  • Take ownership of support requests and manage them through the helpdesk system.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, network and user account issues.
  • Set up, configure and support Windows PCs, laptops, printers and peripherals.
  • Create and manage user accounts within Active Directory and Microsoft 365.
  • Support password resets, permissions, shared drives, email accounts and user access.
  • Install and deploy new computers, software, applications and updates.
  • Support Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel and OneDrive.
  • Assist with school systems and applications, including SIMS and curriculum software.
  • Support classroom technology, including interactive displays, projectors and audio-visual equipment.
  • Assist with Wi-Fi, network switches, servers, backups and other infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot network connectivity and printing issues.
  • Prepare and test IT equipment for new staff and pupils.
  • Support assemblies, meetings, exams, parents’ evenings and other school events when required.
  • Maintain accurate asset registers, equipment records and technical documentation.
  • Monitor consumables and identify equipment requiring repair or replacement.
  • Escalate more complex technical issues to the Senior Technician or wider Tel Group technical team.
  • Follow all school and Tel Group policies relating to safeguarding, cybersecurity and data protection.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience working in a 1st line IT support, service desk or IT Technician role.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Windows 10/11 and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving hardware, software and user account issues.
  • Experience supporting desktops, laptops, printers and other IT equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Active Directory, including creating accounts, resetting passwords and managing basic permissions.
  • A good understanding of networking, including Wi-Fi, IP addressing and connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Confident using and managing a helpdesk ticketing system.
  • Technically confident and able to investigate problems using your own initiative.
  • Ability to explain technical issues clearly to non-technical users.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage multiple support requests.
  • Able to work independently while knowing when to escalate an issue.
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to maintaining a high standard of work.
  • A strong work ethic and willingness to take ownership of tasks.
  • A positive attitude and genuine willingness to learn and develop.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Previous experience working within a school, college or other education setting.
  • Experience supporting SIMS or other management information systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Intune or device management.
  • Experience supporting interactive displays and classroom technology.
  • Basic experience supporting servers, network switches and backup systems.
  • An IT qualification such as CompTIA, Microsoft, BTEC, NVQ or an IT apprenticeship.

Working Hours

The normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm. Some flexibility may occasionally be required to support school requirements, including exams, parents’ evenings, staff training or other events.

Safeguarding

Tel Group is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. The successful applicant will be required to complete a full enhanced DBS check, which will be arranged by Tel Group.

Appointment will also be subject to satisfactory references, confirmation of the right to work in the UK and all relevant pre-employment checks.

Benefits

  • Salary of up to £28,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • Company pension.
  • Life insurance.
  • Full-time, permanent employment.
  • Support and development from an experienced Senior IT Technician.
  • Access to Tel Group’s wider technical team.
  • Opportunities to expand your technical knowledge and progress your career.
  • Experience supporting a varied IT environment within education.
