What they need

Your next adventure starts now!

Be a role model for exceptional outdoor education at Hillary Outdoors Coromandel. As an experienced Instructor, you'll lead high-quality programmes across our marine, bush, and conservation environments, and help shape meaningful learning experiences for young people in a world-class coastal setting.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and capable Outdoor Instructor to join our team at the Hillary Outdoors Coromandel Centre. This is a hands-on, delivery-focused role for an outdoor educator who can independently lead programmes, take Instructor-in-Charge responsibility when required, and actively guide and mentor other instructors in the field.

All instructors are trusted, valued members of our team. You will lead the Hillary Outdoors core product (secondary school programmes), contribute to specialist and tertiary courses, and play a key part in upholding high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism across daily programme delivery.

Purpose of the Role

The Instructor leads outdoor and adventure programmes that are safe, engaging, and aligned with Hillary Outdoors' educational kaupapa. The role strengthens programme quality by setting the standard for best practice, supporting trainee and developing instructors, and contributing actively to the continuous improvement of delivery, safety systems, and centre culture.

About Us

Hillary Outdoors provides powerful, experiential education that builds confidence, teamwork, and resilience in young people through challenge and adventure in the outdoors. We operate iconic centres in Tongariro and the Coromandel, offering programmes across marine, bush, and alpine environments.

Our Coromandel Marine and Conservation Centre sits on a stunning 340-hectare coastal property surrounded by native bush and protected marine areas - a unique base for learning in coastal, marine, and conservation contexts.

About You

You're a confident, experienced outdoor instructor who takes pride in running high-quality programmes and helping others grow. You're comfortable leading groups independently, enjoy mentoring less experienced instructors, and bring sound judgement, clear communication, and genuine professionalism to your work.

You'll bring:

  • Substantial experience leading outdoor education programmes independently.
  • Proven instructional credibility across marine, bush, and/or rock environments.
  • A track record of leadership through coaching, mentoring, or supporting other instructors.
  • Sound knowledge of outdoor safety management systems and risk management.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a close-knit team.
  • A real commitment to Hillary Outdoors' values and kaupapa of learning through challenge and adventure.

Why Hillary Outdoors Coromandel?

This is a chance to work in one of Aotearoa's most remarkable outdoor education settings while being part of a passionate, experienced instructional team. The Coromandel Centre offers diverse delivery environments, a strong team culture, and the opportunity to make a lasting impact on young people through outdoor learning.

Our Coromandel Centre offers excellent staff benefits, including comfortable and affordable accommodation options, 34 days of annual leave per year, regular staff meals, and access to outdoor gear so you can make the most of your own adventures in this stunning location.

The Details
