Flavors From Afar is a Pan-African bistro and wine bar in East Hollywood. We serve dishes from across Africa and its diaspora, with a wine list rooted across the continent. We’re operated by the Tiyya Foundation, a nonprofit that creates hospitality careers for refugees, immigrants and culture keepers.

The role
We’re looking for an experienced Lead Server to deliver polished, warm, personal service and help lead the floor. You’ll work your own section, know our food and wine inside out, train new teammates and set the standard every shift. We’re a small team that pitches in for each other, so there’s no “that’s not my job” here.

What you’ll do

• Give attentive, personal service from greeting to farewell, reading each table and pacing courses with the kitchen and bar
• Guide guests through our Pan-African menu and African wine list with confident recommendations, including allergy and dietary needs
• Lead service when designated: organize the floor, support servers, runners, hosts and bartenders, and catch problems early
• Train new servers on our steps of service, menu, wine service and Toast POS
• Handle guest concerns calmly and bring in management when needed
• Support private dinners, prix fixe nights, wine dinners and events
• Keep the dining room, stations and side work guest-ready from open to close

What you bring

• 5+ years of full-service serving experience; at least 1 year in upscale, fine-dining or chef-driven restaurants preferred
• Strong food, wine and pairing knowledge (we’ll teach you African wines)
• Experience training or leading servers, strongly preferred
• Toast POS experience, strongly preferred; reservation-system experience a plus
• Calm, organized and professional during busy service
• Availability for nights, weekends, holidays and events
• A California Food Handler Card (we cover the cost), and RBS certification or the ability to get it within 60 days of hire
• Able to stand and walk through long shifts, lift 25–40 lbs, and climb two flights of stairs carrying service items
