External: Junior Developer

Our client is a well-established South African fintech in the payments space, modernising its platforms with AI.

About the role
We're looking for a Junior Developer to help build and maintain the systems behind a digital payments platform. You'll learn from experienced engineers as the team modernises its systems with AI, and you'll use AI coding tools from day one, with support to use them carefully and understand the code you ship. This is an early-career engineering role focused on building software with AI. It does not involve designing autonomous agent workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain software with cross-functional teams to a high standard
• Help migrate well-defined parts of existing systems onto modern AI-native services, guided by senior engineers
• Help build features that integrate with LLMs, learning techniques such as context management, embeddings and RAG
• Write clean, maintainable code using AI coding tools, and be able to explain everything you commit
• Follow the team's standards for safe AI use, including checking AI-generated output and protecting payment data
• Investigate and fix bugs, escalating early when you're stuck
• Write unit tests and help test features end to end, including AI features whose output varies
• Use CI/CD pipelines, containers and cloud environments (AWS or Azure) to get code into production
• Take part in code reviews, sprint planning, stand-ups and retrospectives, and keep technical documentation current

Ideal candidate

• Up to 2 years' experience as a software engineer or developer, including internships or graduate programmes
• An IT diploma or degree, or equivalent practical experience such as a recognised coding bootcamp
• Working knowledge of at least one of .NET C#, Python or JavaScript/React
• Regular use of AI coding tools, with the ability to explain and check the code they produce
• A good grasp of databases and SQL, Git and how the web works
• Exposure to building with LLMs through personal, university or work projects is an advantage
• Curiosity about AI and a strong willingness to learn
