Position Summary
Galvan Industries is seeking a hands-on Quality Control Inspector for our structural steel fabrication and metal plate processing shop. This position inspects materials, fabricated parts, welds, and finished assemblies to verify they meet approved drawings, customer specifications, and applicable quality requirements.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable working on the shop floor, and able to communicate quality concerns clearly. This role works closely with production leadership, welders, fabricators, and machine operators to identify problems early, prevent repeat defects, and ensure accurate, complete products are released for shipment.
Key Responsibilities
Material and In-Process Inspection
Verify incoming steel, plate, and purchased components against order requirements, including dimensions, material identification, and supporting documentation.
Inspect cut, drilled, formed, and fabricated parts for dimensional accuracy and workmanship.
Check fit-up, hole locations, alignment, orientation, and assembly dimensions against approved drawings.
Use tape measures, calipers, squares, weld gauges, and other inspection tools.
Identify defects early and communicate required corrections before work moves to the next production stage.
Weld and Final Inspection
Perform visual weld inspections within assigned qualifications and training.
Check weld size, length, location, and visible workmanship against drawings and established acceptance criteria.
Verify required inspection checkpoints and documentation are complete before product release.
Inspect finished assemblies for dimensions, completeness, identification, surface condition, and shipment readiness.
Coordinate required third-party inspections or nondestructive testing with production leadership.
Documentation and Corrective Action
Complete inspection reports, checklists, and quality records accurately and promptly.
Record nonconforming work, identify affected material, and help prevent its unintended use or shipment.
Verify repairs and rework before releasing affected products.
Maintain material traceability and inspection records when required by the job.
Monitor recurring defects and work with production leaders to address their causes.
Maintain inspection equipment and verify calibration status where applicable.
Teamwork and Safety
Explain quality expectations to employees and support training on common defects and inspection requirements.
Follow shop safety procedures and required PPE practices.
Maintain a clean, organized inspection area.
Escalate unresolved quality concerns and hold affected work for review under company procedures.
Qualifications
Required
Experience in quality inspection, steel fabrication, welding, or a related manufacturing environment.
Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and welding symbols.
Ability to use measuring tools and document inspection results accurately.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through.
Ability to communicate corrective actions professionally and work effectively with production teams.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred
Two or more years of quality inspection experience in structural steel fabrication or metal plate processing.
Familiarity with applicable AWS welding requirements and AISC fabrication quality practices.
Experience with material traceability, mill test reports, inspection records, and nonconformance documentation.
AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI) credential.
Experience inspecting CNC-cut parts, welded assemblies, and structural steel components.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
Work regularly in an active fabrication shop around machinery, cranes, forklifts, noise, and welding operations.
Stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, and access parts and assemblies for inspection.
Handle inspection tools and materials and perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
Wear required personal protective equipment.
