What they need

Full-Time Museum Facilities Technician

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a full-time Facilities Technician to join our outstanding team. Spend your workdays around some of the most important air- and spacecraft from the dawn of human flight through today, while helping maintain the historic landmark 1935 Ford Building!

We are an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or any other characteristic protected by law.

Position Summary

Facilities Technicians provide maintenance and custodial services to the Museum as assigned by the Facilities Manager. In addition to typical Facilities work, Facilities Technicians work in support of the Education, Special Events, and Curatorial departments on projects ranging from providing one of San Diego’s most iconic event venues, to changing exhibits of historically important aircraft and aviation-related objects. The technician will bring intermediate skills in one or more building trades: the ability to fix technical equipment, painting of building areas, minor electrical work, and other duties as assigned. This position will offer opportunities to learn additional skills and earn or maintain equipment operating licenses. The Museum is a safety-first workplace. This is a full-time, hourly (non-exempt), daytime position.

  • Troubleshoot and fix technical equipment issues.
  • Miscellaneous tasks such as replacing light bulbs and assembling furniture.
  • Perform code-compliant maintenance, repair, and updates to building equipment/systems in their scope of trades expertise (electrical, HVAC, etc.).
  • Open and/or close the Museum daily, following building security protocols.
  • Operate Museum vehicles and assist with their maintenance.
  • Maintain and clean displays and equipment.
  • Perform routine custodial duties (floors, carpets, windows and restrooms).
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Facilities Director.

Minimum Qualifications

· Lifelong learner eager to acquire new knowledge and skills.

· Intermediate skills in one or more of the following fields: Electrical, Controls, and the ability to troubleshoot and fix technical equipment issues. Consideration given for other trade skills.

· Experience working with hand and power tools and knowledge of tool safety.

· Ability to climb ladders at least 12ft high and work on elevated platforms.

· Must be dependable with excellent attendance and references.

· Ability to communicate effectively and to follow written and spoken instructions.

· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

· This position will be required to work and be adaptable to Shift work.

· Basic computer literacy.

· Ability to perform basic mathematics.

· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Good driving record required.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a number of environments which may include hot, cold, noisy, dusty, close spaces or at heights. The Facilities department will supply PPE for the jobs as required. Standing and/or walking for six or more hours per day and heavy physical activity is periodically required, including the handling of objects heavier than 50 pounds. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace. Successful completion of a drug screening and criminal background check are required prior to final offer of employment.

Compensation
