What they need

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences (CEEES) at the University of Notre Dame is expanding its research and educational strengths in Construction Engineering and Management and invites applications for multiple open rank faculty positions in Innovative Construction Engineering and Infrastructure Systems. Appointments may be made at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level.

Areas of particular interest include, but are not restricted to:

  • Intelligent, Autonomous, and Geospatial Construction Systems: construction robotics and autonomous equipment; geomatics, sensing, reality capture, and computer vision; digital twins and cyber-physical systems; human-robot collaboration; and AI-enabled construction planning and operations.
  • Future Construction and Infrastructure Systems: advanced and automated construction methods; industrialized, off-site, and additive construction; construction production, productivity, and sustainability; workforce transformation; safety and human factors; and human-AI collaboration.
  • Construction and Infrastructure in Complex Environments: innovative approaches to constructing, maintaining, and adapting infrastructure in dense urban, constrained, remote, extreme, and extraterrestrial environments, including challenges associated with existing infrastructure, limited access and resources, and complex project settings.

These areas are intended to be illustrative rather than restrictive, and candidates pursuing innovative research that broadly advances construction engineering and infrastructure systems are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications Successful candidates are expected to develop internationally recognized and externally funded research programs, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in construction engineering and management, mentor students, and contribute to collaborative research within the Department, across the University, and with industry and government partners.

Candidates for appointment at the Assistant Professor level must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. degree or have completed all but the dissertation in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, or a closely related field. Candidates for appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, or a closely related field. Applicants are invited to provide any or all of the following: cover letter; curriculum vitae; comprehensive research plan; statement of teaching philosophy and interests; contact information for three professional references; and statement regarding potential engagement with and commitment to the mission of the University of Notre Dame.

Application Instructions To guarantee full consideration, applications must be received by November 15, 2026; however, applications will be accepted until December 1, 2026. Interested candidates should submit their complete application materials through the online portal at https://apply.interfolio.com/193414. For any inquiries or questions related to this search, please feel free to contact Dr. Wenying Ji, Chair of the Faculty Search Committee, at [email protected].

The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or age in employment. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and complies with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a). Background Check This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate.
