What they need

About us: Legal Aid of North Carolina is a statewide, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income people to ensure equal access to justice and to remove legal barriers to economic opportunity.

Legal Aid is an innovative, creative, progressive, and efficient civil legal service provider to the poor, working towards an inclusive justice system of equal access. All voices are valued, heard, and respected.

Who we are looking for: The Fair Housing Project seeks a Fair Housing Testing Coordinator to support and coordinate the Project's statewide testing program. The Testing Coordinator recruits, trains, and supervises fair housing testers; coordinates testing investigations; prepares reports required by funding agencies; assists with administrative complaints and litigation involving testing; and supports community education and outreach efforts. This position requires strong organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and a demonstrated commitment to civil rights and fair housing enforcement.

Why this role matters: The Fair Housing Testing Coordinator plays a critical role in advancing fair housing and civil rights protections across North Carolina. Through the coordination of fair housing testing investigations, this position helps identify discriminatory housing practices, supports enforcement efforts, and promotes equal housing opportunities for individuals and communities throughout the state.

What you will do:

  • Recruit and train a diverse pool of fair housing testers who can conduct tests in all geographic areas of North Carolina.
  • Supervise testers, including assigning and coordinating tests, selecting test sites, monitoring ongoing tests, and debriefing testers.
  • Prepare all reporting of testing to comply with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and other funders' requirements.
  • Assist with administrative complaints and litigation involving testing.
  • Engage in self-study, such as reading newspapers and legal publications, to remain informed about issues and legal matters that may affect the practice of fair housing law, testing investigations, and Legal Aid of North Carolina's client population.
  • Participate in community education and outreach activities, including speaking to groups as requested and preparing informational materials.
  • Maintain accurate testing records, databases, and related documentation.
  • Assist with the preparation of reports related to testing activities.
  • Perform general administrative duties, including typing, data entry, document preparation, and file maintenance.
  • Provide administrative and program support to Fair Housing Project staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of experience, with an advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong recordkeeping skills.
  • High degree of computer literacy required, including advanced competency in Excel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate well with and train volunteers and testers.
  • Demonstrated commitment to relate to and work for Legal Aid of North Carolina's client population.
  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and fair housing enforcement.
  • Current North Carolina driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to travel throughout North Carolina, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Experience in the legal profession.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Fluency in Spanish (preferred)

What we offer:

  • Compensation: The annual salary range for this position is $40,000 - $50,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Health Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and eligible dependents
  • Retirement Plan: 401(k) plan with a discretionary employer contribution
  • Work Environment: Culture that promotes work-life balance, flexibility, and overall employee well-being
  • Paid Leave: Generous paid time off and recognized holidays
  • Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for eligible employees
