What they need

Family Participation Convenor (Identified)

Mamu Health Service Limited (MHSL) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation committed to providing holistic, culturally safe, and community-driven services that strengthen the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We are seeking a motivated and dedicated Family Participation Convenor (Identified) to join our Family Services team.

About the Role

The Family Participation Convenor provides assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families through culturally safe, family-led decision making processes, in partnership with the Queensland Department of Child Safety. The role facilitates and advocates for families' voices, coordinating Family-Led Decision Making (FLDM) meetings and developing family-driven case plans that address child protection concerns, comply with statutory requirements, and can be submitted to the Children's Court as part of a child protection order application (Child Protection Act 1999, s.59).

Working closely with families, kin, cultural supports, and Child Safety, the Convenor ensures families retain active, empowered roles in safeguarding their children while the plan meets all legal and quality benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage referred families early and respectfully, obtaining informed consent and building trust through home visits, calls, and yarning.
  • Plan and facilitate FLDM meetings, adhering to cultural protocols and promoting self-determination.
  • Work with families to co-create detailed, court-ready case plans addressing safety, permanency, cultural support, and contact arrangements, in line with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle.
  • Liaise closely with Child Safety throughout referral, planning, and court processes, and attend court or stakeholder meetings as required.
  • Advocate for families' plans and cultural perspectives, connect families to support services, and follow up on case plan implementation.
  • Maintain accurate, timely case records and documentation, and escalate serious safety concerns promptly.

Selection Criteria

  • This is an Identified position – applicants must be Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (as permitted under sections 25, 104 & 105 of the QLD Anti-Discrimination Act), with strong cultural knowledge and community connections.
  • Diploma or Degree in Social/Community Work, Human Services or a related field, or substantial relevant experience; Certificate IV in Community Services (Protective Care) or Diploma in Community Services, or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in child protection, family support or family engagement roles (2+ years desirable), including exposure to the Queensland child protection system.
  • Sound knowledge of child protection legislation and case planning requirements (e.g. CP Act s.51A, s.59) and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle.
  • Excellent communication, mediation, and advocacy skills, with the ability to facilitate complex family meetings impartially and manage sensitive discussions.
  • Strong organisational and documentation skills, with the ability to manage a caseload, meet court timeframes, and write clear professional reports.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Current Queensland Working with Children Check (Blue Card) and current QLD Driver's Licence, or ability to obtain; current First Aid Certificate, or ability to obtain prior to start date.

What We Offer

  • An opportunity to contribute to positive outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.
  • A supportive and culturally safe working environment.
  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
