What they need

FIBER OPTIC SPLICING TECHNICIAN

ABOUT THE POSITION

Signal Cable Inc. is looking for experienced Fiber Optic Splicing Technicians to support our fiber construction, maintenance, repair, and network restoration operations.

As a Fiber Optic Splicing Technician with our company, you will work directly with active fiber infrastructure and will be responsible for preparing, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and documenting fiber connections. Your assignments may involve both newly constructed networks and existing infrastructure requiring maintenance, expansion, repair, or restoration.

This position requires accuracy and strong attention to detail. We expect our technicians to understand fiber assignments, follow project documentation, maintain proper fiber organization, and verify that completed connections meet required optical performance and project specifications.

This is a full-time W-2 field position that requires regular travel between assigned project locations.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Your daily work will include preparing fiber optic cables, buffer tubes, individual strands, splice trays, closures, and other components before beginning the splicing process. You will perform fusion splicing on single-mode fiber and complete mid-span, end-point, maintenance, construction, and restoration splicing according to the requirements of each project.

After completing the physical splicing work, you will be responsible for testing fiber paths and confirming that the network is performing correctly. This may involve using OTDRs, optical power meters, VFLs, light sources, and other fiber testing equipment to evaluate connections and identify excessive loss, damaged fibers, breaks, poor splices, incorrect connections, or other network problems.

When testing identifies an issue, you will be expected to locate the source of the problem and perform the necessary corrective work. Completed fibers must be properly routed, organized, labeled, protected, and secured within splice trays and closures.

You will work from splice sheets, fiber assignments, network diagrams, construction prints, and other technical documentation provided for each project. Accurate documentation is also part of the job, including recording completed splices, fiber assignments, test results, production information, and other required field data.

Our technicians are expected to take proper care of fusion splicers, cleavers, testing instruments, and other field equipment. You will also communicate regularly with supervisors, construction crews, and other technicians when network conflicts, damaged facilities, unexpected conditions, or other issues affect the planned work.

All assignments must be completed in accordance with Signal Cable safety procedures, OSHA requirements, customer standards, and any project-specific safety rules.

EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

We are primarily looking for candidates with previous hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing, fiber network construction, telecommunications maintenance, or network restoration.

You should have practical experience operating fusion splicing equipment and understand the complete fiber preparation process, including cable preparation, cleaning, cleaving, strand identification, splice protection, and proper fiber management.

Technicians should also be comfortable using OTDRs and other optical testing equipment and should understand how to interpret loss measurements and recognize abnormal test results. Experience working with splice cases, trays, closures, and other fiber management components is important for this position.

You must be able to read and follow splice diagrams, fiber counts, assignments, network drawings, and construction documentation. Strong troubleshooting skills are necessary because technicians may be required to identify fiber faults, determine the cause of network performance problems, and complete the appropriate corrective work.

We also expect our technicians to maintain accurate records, organize their own assignments, work effectively without continuous supervision, and communicate professionally with supervisors and other members of the field team.

WORKING IN THE FIELD

This is not a fixed-location position. As part of Signal Cable's field operations, you may work at cabinets, handholes, vaults, pedestals, telecommunications facilities, construction sites, and other fiber network access locations.

Field conditions can vary from one assignment to another. Technicians must be comfortable working outdoors, remaining at a splice location for extended periods, transporting testing and splicing equipment, lifting and positioning tools or splice cases, bending, kneeling, and accessing restricted work areas when necessary.

Regular travel between assigned project locations is expected as part of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record, as well as reliable transportation appropriate for assigned field operations when required. Technicians are expected to maintain the tools and equipment necessary to perform their assigned splicing work and to conduct themselves professionally while representing Signal Cable Inc. at customer and project locations.

Candidates must also be able to meet applicable background-screening and drug-testing requirements. Depending on network conditions and project needs, occasional additional hours, weekend assignments, or restoration work may be required.

EMPLOYMENT AND COMPENSATION

This is a full-time W-2 position with Signal Cable Inc. Compensation is determined by assigned work, applicable production categories, project requirements, and relevant field experience.

Specific production rates and job categories are discussed during the hiring process. All compensation practices are administered in accordance with applicable federal and state minimum-wage and overtime requirements.
