Field and Farm Support

Position Overview

Field & Farm Support provides the hands-on labor and practical farm support behind Rain to Resilience research, growing trials, demonstration systems, and cohort readiness. This is a practical role for someone who enjoys working outdoors, can follow technical instructions, and understands that reliable field execution is part of both the program’s research and participant experience.

Core Responsibilities

• Support planting, propagation, transplanting, harvest, soil preparation, compost, irrigation, greenhouse work, farm maintenance, and other assigned agricultural tasks.
• Prepare grow bags, soil/media mixes, irrigation components, planting materials, tools, labels, and test areas.
• Build, reset, maintain, and clean research/test setups under the direction of the Farm Lead, Irrigation Specialist, or approved research/data protocol.
• Support rain-barrel, stand, irrigation, pump/gravity, grow-bag, and soil trials by maintaining the physical test environment.
• Record assigned field observations such as dates, treatments, quantities, visible plant response, irrigation events, maintenance issues, or other defined measures.
• Maintain accurate labels so varieties, treatments, configurations, and research setups are not mixed.
• Prepare farm-side materials for workshops, demonstrations, participant kits, slip/plant distribution, and cohort activities.
• Assist with receiving, moving, staging, loading, and organizing program materials where farm work overlaps with logistics.
• Report equipment problems, plant losses, irrigation failures, material shortages, or other conditions requiring action.
• Follow safety procedures for tools, lifting, heat, field work, vehicles/equipment, and material handling.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Maintain reliable farm and greenhouse conditions for technical and growing trials.
• Ensure demonstration areas and materials are ready before scheduled program activities.
• Protect the integrity of field experiments by following setup, labeling, maintenance, and observation procedures.
• Keep the farm-side portion of Rain to Resilience implementation ready rather than reactive.

Key Deliverables

• Completed recurring farm/greenhouse task lists
• Prepared and maintained research plots/test stations
• Organized grow bags, soil/media, irrigation, and planting materials
• Accurate labels and basic field records
• Prepared demonstration/workshop areas
• Materials staged for cohort activities
• Timely issue reports when field conditions require intervention

Qualifications

• Reliable attendance and ability to work independently from clear task lists after training.
• Comfort working outdoors in Maui conditions.
• Ability to perform physical work, including lifting and moving program materials.
• Ability to follow technical instructions and preserve research configurations.
• Willingness to document completed work and report problems rather than making unapproved changes to an experiment or system.

Preferred Experience

Agriculture, landscaping, irrigation, nursery, construction, grounds maintenance, greenhouse work, or similar hands-on experience is helpful but not required for every assignment.
