Field Engineer

Red Cedar Steel Erectors (RCS) is one of the nation’s top union structural steel erecting companies with offices in Wisconsin, Arizona and Kansas and projects nationwide. In business for over 45 years, the firm has grown significantly in the last five years and continues to expand in scope and territory to service a large and diverse client base such as Amazon, Ford and Target as well as top construction firms and steel fabricators.

We are looking for an ambitious Field Engineer to join our team and build a rock-solid technical foundation directly on the job site. This role is designed for a driven professional eager to dive into field operations, master the interpretation of complex drawings, and champion quality assurance and control processes. Working closely with our experienced teams, you will drive schedule coordination, streamline field communication, and gain invaluable, hands-on exposure to the entire project delivery lifecycle. Technical

· Read and interpret steel erection drawings, connection details, and erection plans, steel shop drawings and interpret specifications.

· Understand the means and methods of steel erection and detailing.

· Gain understanding of survey/layout, quality control and safety management.

· Conduct useful safety inspections using Safety Culture.

· Review and complete submittals.

· Learn the RFI process and be able to craft a good RFI.

· Gain working knowledge of site logistics and crane planning.

· Manage steel deliveries and track inventories.

· Learn and demonstrate use of FieldWire and Versatile

· Complete time entry into Foundation.

· Manage document control (e.g, drawings, RFIs, submittals, design changes, etc.)

· Manage customer onsite documentation requirements (i.e., employee drug screening log, training logs, etc.)

· Complete accurate daily reports and upload jobsite photos.

· Document and distribute weather delay notices

· Conduct quantity survey of complete and incomplete work.

· Recognize issues to raise to site leadership and PM (i.e., cost, logistical, and schedule impacts, safety concerns, etc.)

· Track weekly usage of equipment onsite (both owned and rented) and report any underutilization

· Conduct daily walks onsite with the schedule to ensure detail and deck turnovers are on time.

Business/Financials

· Basic cost tracking, quantity takeoffs, and subcontractor coordination.

· Daily reporting and labor hour tracking

· Understand company cost structure and productivity metrics.

· Exposure to construction scheduling and logistics planning tools (MS Project, CM Builder).

Leadership

· Self-leadership. Reliable, trusted, driven, lives the Core Values.

· Communicate the superintendents, foremen and ironworker employees.

· Can attend client meetings and add value to the steel discussion.

· Demonstrates accountability and safety leadership on site.

· Good time management and problem-solving skills.

· Exhibit curiosity and initiative in learning project management fundamentals.

· Manage subcontractor production onsite

Required Qualifications:

• Educational Foundation: A bachelor’s degree in construction management, or a related technical discipline.
• Early Experience: 0 to 2 years of experience in a field or construction environment—internship or co-op experience is highly valued and a great headstart!
• Technical Aptitude: A strong desire to master blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications, along with a natural curiosity for how things are built.
• Communication Skills: The ability to communicate clearly and confidently with a diverse team, from on-site craft workers to project managers.
• Problem-Solving Mindset: A proactive, solutions-oriented attitude with the adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic field environment.
• Mobility & Safety: A commitment to a safety-first mindset and the willingness to work on active project sites.
