What they need
Position Summary
Building Forensics Group (BFG) is seeking a Field Technician to support our Senior Technicians and Forensic Consultants in forensic building investigations and testing. Field Technicians collect evidence and test data under direction, learn BFG methods and safety rules, and can progress toward senior field roles. When not in the field, the Field Technician supports the office and shop.
Our work is a mix of in-town and out-of-town weeks. In-town weeks are based at the office and combine local fieldwork with office and shop work. Out-of-town weeks involve overnight travel to project sites. BFG generally plans the schedule about three weeks ahead so you know which weeks are which.
Schedule & Travel
- Out of town. Out-of-town weeks typically run Sunday night through Thursday night, sometimes through Friday night when a project requires it.
- In town. In-town weeks combine local fieldwork with office and shop work.
- Hours. This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position. All time worked, including paid travel time, is recorded in BFG's timekeeping system and paid. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek and is approved in advance when practicable.
- Travel. Travel may include a company or personal vehicle, air travel, or train travel. You may be asked to drive a company vehicle. A valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the company's insurance carrier are required.
- Lodging and expenses. Lodging and travel expenses for approved project travel are subject to BFG's travel and expense policies.
Areas of Responsibility
Field Work
- Assist Senior Technicians and Forensic Consultants in field investigations and testing.
- Set up test equipment; take photographs, measurements, moisture readings and samples as directed; label and log evidence; complete field forms.
- Load, unload, clean and maintain equipment and vehicles.
- Follow the field plan, job hazard analysis and the direction of the crew lead; report hazards, incidents and near misses immediately.
- Travel overnight to project sites as scheduled.
Office & Shop Support
- Organize and process field photographs and project records.
- Handle, log and run samples under BFG procedures.
- Help with general shop upkeep and equipment inventory.
Coordination
- Coordinate your schedule and work with your supervisors and the needs of internal and external clients.
- Work with Consultants, Project Managers and IT staff as needed.
- Protect client and site confidentiality; do not photograph or share site information outside the project.
What We're Looking For
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Willingness to travel overnight on a recurring basis, including by air, train or company vehicle.
- A valid driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the company's insurance carrier to drive company vehicles.
- Comfort using iPhones and MacBooks.
- Ability to work to a schedule planned about three weeks out.
- Ability to perform the physical demands below, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willingness to complete BFG's safety training, including OSHA 10-Hour Construction before any construction site visit.
Preferred
- Experience in roofing, building envelope, HVAC, restoration or the trades; OSHA 10; coursework in building construction, drafting or environmental technology.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
- Work on residential and commercial building sites in all seasons, including storm-damaged sites, in the heat and humidity of Florida and Georgia.
- Climb and work from ladders, walk roofs within BFG's roof access rules, and enter attics and crawlspaces.
- Stand and walk for extended periods; kneel, crouch, stoop, reach overhead and balance on uneven surfaces.
- Lift and carry equipment and sample cases up to 50 pounds.
- Wear personal protective equipment, including hard hat, eye protection, gloves, safety footwear, fall protection and, when required, a respirator.
- Drive to sites, including trips of several hours within BFG's driving limits.
Training, Licenses & Screening
- Required safety training per BFG's Safety Program, which may include ladder and fall protection training and, when a respirator is required, medical clearance and fit testing. BFG provides first aid, CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed training to field employees within 90 days of hire at BFG's expense.
- Offers are conditional on a background check, a motor vehicle record review for driving duties, and Form I-9 employment eligibility verification.
What We Offer
- Company-issued cell phone and, as needed for your duties, a laptop.
