bout HZS Engineering & Construction

HZS Engineering & Construction is a full-service engineering and construction company working with cities, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), and other public agencies.

Our work includes heavy civil construction, asphalt removal, concrete demolition, concrete flatwork, landscaping, pavement striping, and other infrastructure improvements.

We are seeking a motivated, organized construction professional with hands-on California construction experience to manage projects from planning through completion. The ideal candidate can coordinate subcontractors, lead project engineers, maintain accurate documentation, and keep projects moving safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management and Field Coordination

  • Manage day-to-day project activities from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and scopes of work to understand project requirements.
  • Oversee project engineers and coordinate with field supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers, and inspectors.
  • Plan upcoming work and coordinate labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor activities.
  • Conduct site visits to monitor progress, workmanship, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Identify potential conflicts, delays, or missing information and work with the project team to resolve them.
  • Attend project meetings, document action items, and follow up to ensure timely completion.

Scheduling and Cost Control

  • Develop, update, and monitor project schedules and short-term work plans.
  • Track project costs, commitments, and progress against established budgets.
  • Review subcontractor proposals and supplier quotes for pricing, scope coverage, and exclusions.
  • Prepare detailed change order estimates, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Track changes in scope and maintain supporting records for additional work.
  • Assist with progress billing and review subcontractor payment requests against completed work.

Project Documentation and Communication

  • Prepare clear, complete requests for information (RFIs), track responses, and communicate direction to the appropriate teams.
  • Prepare and coordinate submittals, maintain tracking logs, and follow up on approvals.
  • Maintain current drawings, specifications, meeting minutes, correspondence, and project records.
  • Track material procurement and delivery schedules to prevent avoidable delays.
  • Communicate professionally with owners, agency representatives, architects, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate punch-list work and prepare closeout documentation, including warranties and record drawings, as applicable.

Safety and Quality

  • Support compliance with company safety policies and applicable jobsite requirements.
  • Identify and promptly report unsafe conditions, quality concerns, and work that does not meet project requirements.
  • Coordinate required inspections and testing with the project team.
  • Help ensure deficiencies are corrected and work is ready for inspection.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2–3 years of construction experience, including experience working on projects in California. California construction experience is required for consideration.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Working knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, materials, and jobsite safety.
  • Experience coordinating subcontractors and managing schedules, budgets, and project documentation.
  • Ability to prepare RFIs, submittals, tracking logs, and change order pricing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently, follow through on assignments, and collaborate with office and field teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a light-duty company truck.
  • Ability to travel to assigned project sites and attend in-person meetings and inspections.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with public works projects, particularly projects for cities, school districts, or other public agencies.
  • Experience with heavy civil construction, concrete work, demolition, asphalt, landscaping, or related infrastructure work.
  • Familiarity with public works documentation, prevailing wage requirements, and certified payroll coordination.
  • Experience using construction management, scheduling, or estimating software.
  • Experience managing multiple projects or coordinating several subcontractors simultaneously.
  • Completion of OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour training. Candidates without this training must be willing to complete it within an agreed-upon timeframe after hire.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume highlighting your California construction experience, relevant project types, and project management responsibilities. Include any applicable certifications and construction software experience.
