Are you an experienced infrastructure finance leader looking to shape the investment and funding strategy of a major European energy project?

Do you have a strong track record taking large-scale, capital-intensive infrastructure projects through investment approval, financing and Final Investment Decision?

Would you like to work directly with project leadership, institutional investors, lenders and shareholders on the development of strategically important cross-border electricity infrastructure?

Turner Lovell, specialist recruiters and Talent Advisors across the energy and power infrastructure sectors, are supporting the appointment of a Finance Director for a major HVDC link .

Our client is an international developer of cross-border transmission infrastructure, combining deep transmission-system expertise with a commercially driven project development approach. Backed by experienced infrastructure shareholders and long-term institutional capital, the organisation is developing strategically important assets designed to strengthen security of supply, increase electricity trading capability and enable greater integration of renewable generation.

The project is entering a critical stage of development, and the Finance Director will join the senior leadership team with direct responsibility for creating the financial strategy, governance and funding framework required to progress through development, Final Investment Decision and construction .

Your Role

Reporting into and partnering closely with the Project Director, you will act as the senior financial leader for the project and take ownership of its financial strategy, investment case and long-term financial governance.

This is a broad Project CFO-style mandate combining project finance, investment management, financial modelling, business planning, cost control, shareholder engagement and leadership of the project finance function.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial strategy and governance of the project across development, FID, construction and future operations.
  • Act as the principal finance interface with shareholders, institutional investors, lenders, financial advisers and relevant group functions.
  • Own and continuously develop the integrated business plan, project valuation and financial model.
  • Lead scenario modelling, sensitivity analysis and financial evaluation supporting major investment decisions.
  • Develop and execute the project financing strategy, including lender engagement, financing structures and financial due diligence.
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, liquidity planning, management reporting and shareholder funding requirements.
  • Establish strong financial and project controls across development expenditure and future capital investment.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities early and ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are implemented.
  • Prepare high-quality investment papers and financial materials for board meetings, shareholder forums and key project approval gates.
  • Maintain oversight of treasury, tax, accounting, audit and financial compliance activities alongside specialist teams.
  • Co-lead shareholder engagement through the project board and maintain clear communication with key investment stakeholders.
  • Build and lead the project finance organisation, including finance, investment management, modelling and cost-control capabilities.
  • Support the development of consistent finance processes and investor-readiness across a wider portfolio of transmission infrastructure projects.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Significant senior-level experience within energy, utilities, infrastructure, project finance, investment management or corporate finance.
  • Proven experience supporting major capital-intensive projects through investment approvals, financing and/or Final Investment Decision.
  • Deep expertise in project finance, financial modelling, valuation, business planning and investment governance.
  • Strong understanding of infrastructure financing structures and the requirements of lenders and institutional investors.
  • Experience working directly with boards, shareholders, investment committees, lenders and senior external advisers.
  • Strong commercial judgement with the ability to balance project delivery, financial discipline and long-term value creation.
  • Demonstrable leadership capability, including building and developing high-performing finance teams.
  • Confident operating across complex international organisations and influencing stakeholders outside of direct reporting lines.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Fluent English is required.
  • Relevant university degree required; CFA, ACA, ACCA, CPA or equivalent professional qualification would be beneficial.

Why Apply?

This is a rare opportunity to take financial leadership of a strategically important European HVDC project at a defining stage in its development.

You will have direct influence over the project's bankability, financing strategy, shareholder investment decisions and progression towards FID, while working alongside experienced energy infrastructure executives and major institutional investors.

In return, you can expect:

  • Executive-level influence on a flagship energy infrastructure development.
  • Direct exposure to shareholders, investors, lenders and project boards.
  • The opportunity to shape the finance function and governance framework from an early stage.
  • Involvement throughout the full lifecycle from development and financing through construction and operations.
  • International exposure across major European energy markets.
  • The chance to play a significant role in infrastructure supporting renewable integration, energy security and cross-border electricity trading.
  • Long-term career opportunities within a growing portfolio of major transmission and HVDC projects.
