What they need

Hnry is growing quickly across New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom. As we grow, our finance processes need to evolve with us, staying practical, proportionate, and scalable. 🧡

This is a hands-on operational role focused on keeping the finances of our Australian entity accurate, timely, and well organised. You’ll support the day-to-day running of our finance function, from accounts payable and receivable through to monthly management accounts, BAS lodgements, and payroll.

You’ll spot gaps, improve processes, look for smart ways to use AI to automate routine tasks, and make sure issues are raised with the right people at the right time. You’ll work closely with our external bookkeepers, auditors, and advisors, as well as department managers across the business. You will report to the Internal Finance Manager.

🚀 Responsibilities

  • Handle day-to-day financial operations for the Australian entity, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bookkeeping oversight.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, budget variance analysis, and key metric reports.
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.
  • Help draft and maintain right-sized financial policies for a fast-growing start-up.
  • Support Australian tax compliance (GST, PAYG withholding, fringe benefits tax, and payroll tax) and BAS lodgements, working with external advisors as needed.
  • Assist with the preparation of statutory financial statements alongside external auditors and advisors.
  • Help prepare payroll for the Australian entity.
  • Liaise with external bookkeepers to improve processes and deliver fast, accurate, timely financial reports.
  • Monitor bank accounts and support treasury activities, including intercompany cash allocation and management of term deposits, to ensure sufficient funds are available for business initiatives.
  • Work with leadership on budgeting, cash-flow forecasts, and financial projections.
  • Run regular meetings with department managers to review budgets and financial performance.
  • Support the annual insurance and workers’ compensation policy renewal process.
  • Assist with transfer pricing documentation and intangible asset accounting (including tracking engineering time for capitalisation), with the opportunity to build deeper expertise in these areas as the role develops.
  • Identify opportunities to use AI tools to automate routine finance tasks, freeing up time for analysis and decision support.

🫵 You will:

  • Have a a qualification in finance, accounting, or a related field, with experience in accounting, audit, or tax, currently working towards (or planning to complete) CA or CFA.
  • Have strong communication, customer-service, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Be able to prioritise and work proactively in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Have demonstrated problem-solving skills and a willingness to contribute ideas and drive process improvements.
  • Be genuinely curiosity about AI and its application to finance and accounting work, and comfortable adopting new tools and technology.
  • Have a team-player mindset with the capacity to collaborate across the company while managing autonomous tasks.

Bonus points for the following:

  • Familiarity with Australian tax and compliance obligations (e.g. GST, PAYG, FBT, payroll tax, BAS lodgements) preferred.
  • Examples of using AI or automation to streamline a finance process, whether at work or on your own projects
  • Previous payroll experience, particularly Australian payroll and super obligations
  • Experience working with external auditors, tax advisors or outsourced bookkeepers
  • Experience working within a financial institution and/or experience being self-employed (freelancing, contracting etc) in any industry/profession
