The Fund Controller will lead the monthly close and financial reporting process, oversee third-party fund administration, and help develop effective controls for complex and illiquid investments.
The position requires extensive alternative investment accounting experience, strong technical accounting knowledge, and the ability to coordinate across portfolio management, operations, treasury, tax, legal, audit, and external service providers.
Responsibilities
- Manage the monthly NAV close performed by the third-party fund administrator, with particular attention to complex and illiquid asset accounting, valuation, fees, expenses, and performance reporting.
- Oversee accounting and financial reporting for private credit funds and diversified alternative investment structures.
- Control the investment closing process for illiquid assets across finance, treasury, accounting, and reporting activities.
- Coordinate with portfolio management, operations, tax, legal, treasury, financing, and external service providers to resolve accounting and operational issues.
- Prepare analyses of the investment pipeline, liquidity requirements, and projected fund cash flows.
- Oversee fund treasury activities, including capital calls, distributions, financing coordination, and liquidity planning.
- Support the design and implementation of accounting and reporting processes for new investment structures and asset classes.
- Monitor the fund administrator's performance through established service levels and key performance indicators.
- Control the fund expense review, approval, and reporting process.
- Lead external audit coordination and oversee regulatory, financial, and debt covenant reporting requirements.
- Own the financial information used in investor reports, capital statements, annual audited financial statements, and applicable SEC filings, including Forms 10-Q and 10-K.
- Prepare and review financial materials for the Board of Directors.
- Respond to information requests from clients, prospective clients, and client consultants accurately and within required deadlines.
- Research new accounting pronouncements and assess their potential effect on fund financial statements.
- Lead or coordinate Alternative Funds Finance projects, process improvements, and technology initiatives.
- Apply appropriate controls to financial reporting processes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and oversight.
- Provide oversight and direction to external service-provider teams. Direct-report responsibilities may be included depending on the consultant's experience and the needs of the engagement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Active or inactive CPA license.
- Eight to ten years of experience in financial accounting, audit, or finance within an alternative investment management environment.
- Experience supporting one or more of the following asset classes or fund types: private credit, real estate, private equity, hedge funds, or publicly reporting investment funds.
- Demonstrated experience managing or reviewing monthly NAV close processes.
- Experience accounting for complex or illiquid investments and evaluating related valuation, fee, expense, and performance-reporting considerations.
- Working knowledge of US GAAP and investment company accounting.
- Ability to implement accounting and reporting processes for investment structures across multiple asset classes.
- Experience with private equity and hedge fund structures.
- Experience managing external audit processes and responding to audit requests.
- Understanding of fund treasury, liquidity forecasting, capital calls, distributions, and cash-flow projections.
- Experience overseeing third-party fund administrators or other external accounting service providers.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience using Bloomberg.
- Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and projects in a fast-paced environment.
