What they need

Financial Controller, Investment Management - Boston, MA

Overview

We’re partnering with a highly regarded global investment firm to hire a Financial Controller for a newly created role within a growing investment business. This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership, work directly with deal teams and portfolio managers, and lead the fund finance activities behind a varied investment portfolio. You’ll oversee third-party administrator teams, work through complex accounting and valuation questions, and help shape how the finance function develops as the business expands.

The leadership is a major part of the appeal. You’ll report to an accomplished senior finance leader who is an excellent mentor and genuinely invested in the development of the people around them. For an experienced finance professional looking for broader responsibility, closer relationships with investment teams, and a strong leader to learn from, this is a compelling next step.

Company / Team / Position Highlights

  • Exceptional leadership and mentorship:

Work closely with a highly respected finance leader who brings deep technical knowledge, provides thoughtful guidance, and values the contributions of their team.

  • Direct involvement with investment teams: Develop strong relationships with deal professionals and portfolio managers, helping them understand the financial implications of investment activity and address questions as they arise.

  • Meaningful leadership responsibility: Lead the day-to-day finance function, oversee external administrator teams, and coordinate work across internal groups. You’ll have a real say in priorities, processes, and the quality of the team’s work.

  • Interesting work and continued development: Broaden your exposure to public and private investments, different fund structures, and complex transactions, with access to experienced colleagues and formal professional development resources across an established global firm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the fund finance function: Take responsibility for day-to-day execution, set priorities across key workstreams, and oversee third-party administrators to ensure timely, accurate reporting and responsive service.
  • Partner with investment professionals: Work closely with deal teams and portfolio managers to understand investment activity, resolve accounting and valuation questions, and provide financial insight for ongoing portfolio monitoring.
  • Own financial reporting and oversight: Oversee NAV reviews, investor reporting, consolidations, expense allocations, and cash management, ensuring the reporting accurately reflects the underlying investments and fund structures.
  • Guide valuations and the audit process: Oversee U.S. GAAP valuations and supporting materials for senior stakeholders, lead the annual audit, and serve as the primary relationship owner with external auditors.
  • Help the business operate more effectively: Bring together colleagues across finance, investment operations, legal, compliance, and tax to address complex issues. Improve systems, reporting, and workflows as business needs evolve, including practical applications of automation and emerging technology.

Qualifications

  • 13+ years of relevant accounting and finance experience, including experience within asset management or alternative investments.
  • Prior Big Four experience, private equity fund administration, and/or fund finance experience are a plus. A CPA is valued.
  • Strong technical accounting skills, with experience across investment reporting, valuations, audits, and interpreting fund or legal documentation.
  • Experience leading teams or complex workstreams, overseeing external service providers, and communicating effectively with senior stakeholders.
  • Strong Excel skills, comfort with accounting and reporting systems, and an interest in using technology to improve how finance teams work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
