What they need
About SmartPro
SmartPro Financial is a growing financial advisory firm supporting a network of roughly 135 affiliated advisors. Our team spans compliance, operations, marketing, data, and advisor services, and we're building the infrastructure to support the next stage of our growth. As we evolve our business model and expand our independent advisory platform, strong financial leadership is central to how we scale.
The Role
We're looking for a hands-on Controller to own SmartPro's accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls. Reporting to the COO, you'll be the firm's financial backbone: keeping the books accurate and on time, building the reporting leadership relies on to make decisions, and putting in place the processes and controls a growing, regulated firm needs. This is a role for someone who likes building as much as maintaining. You will be a key part of the decision-making process and add valuable input regarding the financial impact of new developments.
What You'll Do
You'll perform the monthly and annual close process and produce accurate, timely financial statements. You'll own the general ledger, chart of accounts, and daily cash management and banking. You will approve all expenditures based on monthly budgets. You'll design and maintain internal controls and support. You'll build budgets, forecasts, and management reports and present them to leadership. You will supervise HR/Payroll and A/P using extensive experience in payroll, compensation, employee benefits and employment law. You will work closely with outside CPA firm to provide all documentation for annual income tax preparation. You'll be able to identify opportunities to automate and systematize financial workflows as our tech stack grows.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA strongly preferred
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership role
- Experience in financial services, ideally with an RIA, broker-dealer, or wealth management firm
- Familiarity with advisor compensation structures, revenue sharing, and fee-based revenue models
- Proven expertise in payroll, multi-state wage and hour laws, human resources and employee insurance benefits.
- Experience with partnerships and related tax issues.
- Strong command of GAAP, month-end close, and internal controls
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and other accounting software.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace including Google Sheets and/or advanced Excel
- Comfortable in a fast-moving environment where you'll both do the work and build the process around it
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting a firm through a structural or regulatory transition
- Exposure to custodial platforms such as Schwab or Fidelity/NFS
- Experience implementing new accounting and payroll systems or automation tools.
Pay: From $100,000.00 per year
