Department: Finance

Reports to: Finance Director

Industry: Construction

The opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Financial Professional that will lead the day-to-day financial control and reporting activities of the company. Working closely with the Finance Director and operational leaders, the role will ensure that management information is accurate, timely and commercially useful; that financial controls are robust; and that the business meets its statutory, tax and reporting obligations. The role will also support budgeting, forecasting, cash management and continuous improvement across finance processes and systems.

This role is perfect for someone who is looking to make the next step in their career on their route to becoming a Finance Director.

Key responsibilities

  • Financial reporting: Lead the month-end and year-end close processes and deliver accurate management accounts, balance sheets, cash flow reporting and supporting analysis to agreed timetables.
  • Financial control: Maintain a strong control environment, including balance-sheet reconciliations, journals, accruals, prepayments, fixed assets, revenue recognition and approval controls.
  • Commercial insight: Provide clear analysis of revenue, gross margin, overheads, profitability, working capital and project or contract performance, highlighting risks and opportunities.
  • Cash and working capital: Oversee cash flow forecasting, debtor and creditor management, stock-related financial controls and actions to improve working capital.
  • Compliance: Ensure timely and accurate completion of statutory accounts support, audit schedules, VAT returns, CIS returns, tax information and other regulatory submissions, liaising with external advisers and auditors as required.
  • Finance operations: Maintain effective purchase ledger, sales ledger, credit control, banking and payroll-related finance processes, with appropriate segregation of duties.
  • Systems and improvement: Improve finance systems, reporting tools, data quality and documented procedures; reduce manual work and strengthen efficiency, resilience and control.
  • Leadership: Manage, coach and develop finance team members, setting clear priorities, service standards and accountability.
  • Business partnering: Build effective relationships across the business and explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues.
  • Risk management: Identify financial and operational risks, recommend proportionate controls and escalate material issues promptly.
  • Ad hoc support: Support the Finance Director with investment appraisal, financing, insurance, banking, due diligence and other strategic projects as required.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • Qualified or part qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), or qualified by experience with a strong record in financial control.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in a financial role within the construction industry, including experience of preparing VAT and CIS returns.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or similar senior finance role.
  • Experience in a growing or changing owner-managed business with annual revenue of £5m+ and a workforce of 15+ would be advantageous.
  • Strong technical grounding in management and statutory reporting, balance-sheet control, budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management.
  • Experience of leading a month-end close and producing high-quality management information to demanding deadlines.
  • Experience of managing and developing a finance team.
  • Advanced Excel capability and confidence working with accounting systems, reporting tools and large data sets.
  • Experience in a project-based, contracting, equipment, installation or service environment would be advantageous.
  • Experience of stock, work in progress, revenue recognition, job costing or project margin analysis would be advantageous.
