Financial Controller / Management Accountant
Part Time | Flexible Hours | Taranaki
About Active+ Taranaki
Active+ Taranaki is a leading rehabilitation and physiotherapy provider delivering services across New Plymouth, Ōpunake, Hāwera and surrounding communities. We are part of the nationwide Active+ network and are known locally for high quality rehabilitation, strong clinical outcomes and a connected team culture.
We are a growing healthcare business with multiple service lines, ACC contracts and expanding operations across Taranaki.
We are now seeking an experienced Financial Controller / Management Accountant to work alongside our Directors and leadership team, strengthening our financial visibility, supporting sustainable growth and helping us make well informed commercial decisions.
This is not a traditional accounting or compliance role. We already work with an external accountant who manages our annual accounts, tax and technical accounting requirements.
Instead, we are looking for a commercially minded finance professional who can provide strong management reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cashflow oversight, while helping us better understand and improve the financial performance of the business.
The role is flexible in structure and hours and could suit someone seeking one to three days per week, school friendly hours or a portfolio style arrangement.
About the Role
This is a hands on finance role working closely with the Directors and leadership team.
You will help ensure we have clear, timely and meaningful financial information, while providing practical insights that support operational and strategic decision making.
Management Reporting and Business Performance
- Develop and maintain clear monthly management reporting for the Directors and leadership team
- Monitor financial performance across the business and identify key trends, risks and opportunities
- Provide practical financial insights and recommendations to support decision making
- Develop and monitor key financial and operational performance measures
- Help translate financial information into clear actions for the leadership team
Budgeting, Forecasting and Cashflow
- Lead and maintain the annual budgeting process
- Develop and maintain rolling financial and cashflow forecasts
- Monitor actual performance against budget and provide clear variance analysis
- Maintain visibility over cashflow and forward cash requirements
- Support financial planning around growth, investment and major business decisions
Commercial and Strategic Support
- Provide financial modelling to support new services, growth opportunities and investment decisions
- Support analysis of performance across our different clinical services, locations and contracts
- Assist the leadership team to understand profitability, utilisation and financial performance across the business
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, cashflow and overall financial performance
- Provide financial insights to support both operational and longer term strategic planning
Financial Systems and Processes
- Review and strengthen internal financial processes and controls
- Help develop efficient and reliable finance systems
- Improve financial dashboards, reporting and visibility across the organisation
- Ensure accurate and timely financial information is available to management
- Identify opportunities to simplify and improve existing processes
Finance Oversight
- Provide oversight and support around accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and other day to day financial processes
- Work collaboratively with our administration and leadership teams to maintain good financial disciplines
- Help establish clear responsibilities and accountability around financial processes
- Review financial information and processes where required
External Relationships
- Work collaboratively with our external accountant, who remains responsible for annual accounts, tax and technical accounting requirements
- Liaise with our bank and other professional advisors where appropriate
- Ensure external providers have the information they require
- Support the implementation of relevant financial recommendations and improvements
About You
We are looking for a commercially minded finance professional who enjoys working closely with business owners and leadership teams.
We are more interested in your experience, commercial capability and fit with our team than a particular accounting qualification.
You will ideally have:
- Strong experience in finance, management accounting, financial control or commercial business roles
- Excellent management reporting, budgeting and forecasting capability
- Strong cashflow management and financial analysis skills
- The ability to translate financial information into clear insights and practical recommendations
- Experience working with small to medium sized businesses
- Confidence working directly with Directors and senior leaders
- Experience improving financial systems, processes and reporting
- Strong Excel and accounting software skills
- High attention to detail and integrity
- A proactive, practical and solutions focused approach
- Strong communication and relationship skills
A background in accounting or finance would be beneficial, however CA or CPA qualification is not required.
Experience within healthcare, professional services or another multi service business would be an advantage, but is not essential.
What We Offer
- Flexible structure and working hours
- Approximately one to three days per week depending on the right person and arrangement
- Opportunity to work closely with the Directors and senior leadership team
- Meaningful involvement in the growth and development of the business
- Varied work across financial, operational and strategic areas
- The opportunity to genuinely influence how the organisation understands and manages its financial performance
- A supportive and connected team culture
- The opportunity to contribute to a growing healthcare organisation making a real difference across Taranaki
Location
Taranaki based is preferred, with the opportunity to work from our New Plymouth office alongside the leadership team.
Some hybrid or flexible working arrangements may be considered for the right person.
