Financial Controller - Manufacturing & Distribution

Steele Industries is a growing night vision manufacturer and distributor seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to lead our accounting processes, strengthen financial reporting, and support continued expansion.

This role will work directly with the owner, our existing accounting support team, operations staff, and a fractional CFO. We need someone who takes ownership, establishes dependable processes, and turns financial information into clear, actionable reporting.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting and maintain accurate financial records in QuickBooks Online.
• Coordinate and oversee the work of our existing accounting support team and outside bookkeeper.
• Establish and manage the monthly close process, including reconciliations and timely financial statements.
• Prepare monthly profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, and management reports.
• Maintain a rolling cash forecast and identify potential cash shortfalls before obligations become due.
• Organize payment schedules for suppliers, credit cards, payroll, and debt, coordinating approvals and payment execution.
• Oversee accounts receivable, expected collections, and follow-up on overdue customer balances.
• Reconcile inventory records to the general ledger and work with operations to investigate discrepancies.
• Ensure inventory valuation, product costs, and cost of goods sold are accurate.
• Maintain visibility into open purchase orders, supplier commitments, deposits, and future payment obligations.
• Produce product and sales-channel profitability reporting where supported by available data.
• Establish procedures for purchasing approvals, receiving, invoice matching, payments, and account reconciliations.
• Compare actual financial results against budgets and explain significant variances.
• Coordinate with the fractional CFO and outside tax accountant.
• Improve financial systems and processes as the business grows.

Qualifications

• Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager with ownership of the monthly close and financial reporting.
• Strong inventory accounting and cost-of-goods-sold experience, preferably in manufacturing or distribution.
• Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Excel.
• Experience managing cash forecasts, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and balance-sheet reconciliations.
• Ability to establish processes while remaining involved in day-to-day execution.
• Strong attention to detail, follow-through, and communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, or equivalent relevant experience.
• CPA or CMA preferred, but not required.

What Success Looks Like

Accurate and timely monthly financial statements, reliable inventory costs, organized payment and collection processes, clear visibility into upcoming cash needs, and less daily financial coordination required from the owner.
