Financial Controller (Part time)

Job Purpose

To provide financial oversight, commercial insight and support to the senior management team, helping improve financial performance, operational efficiency and decision-making across the business.

The Financial Controller will play a key role in developing management reporting, financial forecasts and operational KPIs, whilst supporting the existing finance team and continuing to improve financial processes and controls.

This role is part time between 16 - 24 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and develop monthly management accounts and executive reporting packs, providing meaningful financial analysis and commentary to the directors.
• Produce and maintain cashflow forecasts, budgets and rolling financial forecasts to support business planning.
• Analyse operational profitability, including vehicle and employee utilisation, average daily operating costs and departmental performance.
• Develop rehire reporting to monitor expenditure, profitability and opportunities to improve margins.
• Work closely with departmental managers to establish relevant KPIs, improve reporting and identify opportunities for commercial improvement.
• Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, investigating variances and recommending corrective actions.
• Provide financial insight and recommendations to the directors to support strategic and operational decision-making.
• Support, mentor and develop the existing finance team, helping build knowledge, confidence and greater ownership of financial reporting.
• Review and improve financial processes, systems and internal controls to ensure accurate, timely and reliable financial information.
• Oversee the month-end reporting process, ensuring the integrity of the profit and loss account, balance sheet and supporting reconciliations.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs and strengthen profitability across the business.

Skills and Experience

• Previous experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, Management Accountant or similar senior finance role.
• Strong management accounting, budgeting, forecasting and cashflow management experience.
• Commercially minded, with the ability to turn financial and operational data into practical business recommendations.
• Strong analytical skills and experience developing management reports and operational KPIs.
• Confident communicating with directors and operational managers.
• Experience supporting and developing finance team members.
• Able to work independently, prioritise effectively and deliver improvements within a part-time arrangement.
• Experience within a service-led, plant hire, transport or similar operational business would be advantageous.
• A recognised accounting qualification (ACCA, CIMA or ACA) would be advantageous.

With much of the day-to-day transactional accounting already managed by the existing team, the focus will be on strengthening financial reporting, developing commercial insight and helping the business make better-informed decisions.
