Fire & Security Engineer – Service, Maintenance & Small Works

Standard Security Services Ltd – Blyth, Northumberland
Salary: £35,000–£45,000 per year, depending on experience and technical capability
Job type: Full-time, permanent
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

About the role

Standard Security Services Ltd is an established independent fire and security company based in Blyth, Northumberland, with NSI Gold approval for our security systems activities.

We are looking for an experienced multi-discipline engineer to join our team, carrying out planned maintenance, fault finding, repairs, remedial works and smaller system upgrades across our established customer base.

You will work primarily across intruder alarms, CCTV, access control and fire alarm systems, with opportunities to work on emergency lighting, intercoms and other electronic security systems within our customer portfolio.

Strong intruder alarm experience is particularly important, alongside practical service and fault-finding experience across several of the core disciplines. Experience with emergency lighting, intercoms and other electronic security systems would be an advantage.

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving problems, takes pride in their work and is comfortable working independently, with technical and office support available when needed.

Your responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance across intruder alarms, CCTV, access control and fire alarm systems.
  • Service and maintain emergency lighting, intercoms and other relevant electronic security systems, where trained and competent.
  • Diagnose and repair faults across multiple system types.
  • Complete remedial works identified during maintenance visits.
  • Carry out small works, system alterations and upgrades.
  • Identify defective, obsolete or unsupported equipment and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Communicate professionally with customers.
  • Complete accurate electronic service records and job documentation.
  • Manage your allocated workload and liaise with the office team.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours call-out rota.
  • Work in accordance with company procedures and applicable industry standards.

Experience and skills

A minimum of five years’ relevant fire and security engineering experience is preferred. We will also consider applicants who can demonstrate an equivalent level of technical competence.

We are looking for:

  • Strong intruder alarm servicing, maintenance and fault-finding skills.
  • Practical service and fault-finding experience across several core disciplines, including CCTV, access control and fire alarms.
  • The ability to diagnose and resolve faults independently within your areas of competence.
  • A methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Confidence working across different system types throughout the working week.
  • Good communication skills and a professional, customer-focused manner.
  • Accurate record keeping and attention to detail.
  • A full UK driving licence.

Experience with emergency lighting, intercoms and other electronic security systems is desirable.

We recognise that engineers bring different strengths. You do not need experience with every system or manufacturer; we value sound technical ability, practical multi-discipline experience and a willingness to develop your skills, supported by relevant training.

Salary and benefits

  • £35,000–£45,000 basic salary, depending on experience, technical capability and breadth of knowledge.
  • Salary paid weekly.
  • Annual salary review.
  • 37.5-hour working week.
  • Company van with reasonable private use permitted under the company vehicle policy; private fuel costs are payable by the employee.
  • Company mobile phone and iPad/tablet provided.
  • Paid travel time above the normal 30-minute travel allowance.
  • 28 days’ annual leave, including bank holidays, increasing to 33 days after one year’s service. Working days taken off during the Christmas shutdown come from this entitlement.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Standby allowance for each on-call week, paid in addition to basic salary.
  • Call-out attendance paid door-to-door at the applicable rate.
  • An additional paid day off in lieu when rostered on call on a bank holiday, whether or not you attend a call-out.
  • Company-supported technical training and development.
  • An established engineering team with technical and office support.

Working hours and travel

Core working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

This is a field-based role, working predominantly at customer premises. Actual start and finish times may vary depending on site locations, customer requirements and operational needs. You will also attend our Blyth office as required for meetings, training and equipment collection.

Overtime is not routinely required. Occasional additional hours may be necessary and are paid in accordance with our overtime arrangements.

Call-out rota

The role includes participation in our out-of-hours emergency call-out rota. The anticipated frequency is one week in six, subject to staffing and operational requirements.

You will receive a standby allowance for each on-call week, plus door-to-door payment for call-out attendance, in addition to your basic salary. Full details of the payment structure will be discussed during the recruitment process.

When rostered on call on a bank holiday, you will receive an additional paid day off in lieu, whether or not you attend a call-out. This is separate from your normal annual leave entitlement.

Training and development

We actively support continued technical development and encourage engineers to tell us where they would like to build their skills.

Training opportunities may include manufacturer courses, product-specific training, fire and security industry qualifications and development across different disciplines.

We are happy to discuss relevant training that supports your career development and the needs of the business.

Security screening

Appointment is subject to satisfactory security screening in accordance with BS 7858:2019 and verification of your right to work in the UK. Successful applicants will be required to provide the information and supporting documents needed to complete these checks.

How to apply

If you enjoy service, maintenance and fault finding across fire and security systems, we would be pleased to hear from you.
