We are seeking an experienced Fire Protection Engineer to lead fire protection and life safety design for US utility-scale energy projects, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar PV, natural gas generation facilities, substations, inverter stations, and auxiliary buildings. The role involves planning active and passive fire protection systems, performing hydraulic calculations, analysing fire dynamics and battery thermal runaway risks, and preparing Fire Protection Reports, Fire Hazard Analyses, and Fire Risk Assessments in compliance with NFPA, IFC, IBC, UL, FM Global, and AHJ requirements.

The position requires strong technical ownership — coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, reviewing BESS vendor documentation, preparing permit packages, and leading resolution of comments from utilities, municipalities, fire authorities, and code officials. The engineer will ensure high-quality, code-compliant, and permittable fire protection deliverables across the project lifecycle.

𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻

• Plan active and passive fire suppression systems, smoke control measures, and fire detection and alarm systems.
• Develop fire protection and life safety designs for utility-scale BESS facilities, substations, inverter stations, and auxiliary buildings.
• Perform hydraulic calculations for fire protection systems.
• Review battery enclosure layouts for fire separation distances and emergency access requirements.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 & 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

• Analyse fire dynamics, model fire behaviour, and inspect industrial or commercial sites for latent hazards.
• Prepare Fire Protection Reports (FPR), Fire Hazard Analyses (FHA), and Fire Risk Assessments (FRA).

𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 & 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆

• Evaluate battery technologies and associated thermal runaway risks.
• Develop thermal runaway mitigation strategies for lithium-ion battery systems.

𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

• Review architectural and building drawings to ensure adherence to safety regulations and building codes.
• Apply NFPA standards as they relate to Solar PV, BESS, and natural gas generation facilities.
• Support compliance with NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 72, NFPA 13, NFPA 25, International Fire Code (IFC), International Building Code (IBC), UL 9540, UL 9540A, FM Global requirements, and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

• Prepare permit application packages and technical responses.
• Attend design review meetings with utilities, municipalities, and fire authorities.
• Review comments from code officials and lead resolution efforts.

𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

• Coordinate with electrical, civil, mechanical, structural, SCADA, and substation engineering teams.
• Review BESS vendor documentation, including battery container fire protection designs, UL 9540A test reports, emergency response plans, and hazard mitigation reports.
• Support Owner’s Engineer and Independent Engineer reviews.

𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀

• Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related science field (required).
• Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred).

• Fire protection hydraulic calculation software and related engineering tools
• Fire dynamics and fire behaviour modelling tools

𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 & 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀

• Strong knowledge of U.S. fire codes and standards, including NFPA 855, 68, 69, 72, 13, and 25
• International Fire Code (IFC) and International Building Code (IBC)
• UL 9540, UL 9540A, and FM Global requirements

• Understanding of fire protection requirements for utility-scale BESS, Solar PV, natural gas generation facilities, and substations.
• Knowledge of lithium-ion battery technologies, thermal runaway behaviour, and mitigation methods.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

• Minimum 5 years of direct experience with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), renewable energy, utility, or industrial facilities.
• Experience preparing Fire Hazard Analyses and permitting documentation.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary engineering teams on utility-scale infrastructure projects.
• Psychosocial Skills /Human Skills/Behavioural Skills
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Project Management experience a plus.
• Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to take ideas and run with them from concept to conclusion.
• Technical understanding of clean energy business processes
• Exceptional verbal and writing communication skills with superiors, peers, partners, and other stakeholders.
