What they need

Fire Risk Assessor (H&S)

London & South East | Home Based

£55,000 – £60,000 + Business Travel + Pension + Professional Development

Principal People are exclusively recruiting for a Fire Risk Assessor to join a specialist consultancy delivering Fire and Health & Safety risk-assessment services predominantly across the property-management sector.

The position offers something slightly different from the more volume-driven consultancy models in the market.

You will be trusted to manage your own diary, arrange your own client visits and structure your site and reporting workload independently. The business is not operating a model where consultants are expected to complete an assessment every day and then spend their evenings catching up on reports.

The expected workload is around 15 assessments per month, with some natural fluctuation depending on the work allocated. The business works towards approximately a three-week turnaround from site visit to report issue, rather than imposing a rigid five-day reporting deadline.

Around 95% of the workload is fire-related, predominantly Type 1 Fire Risk Assessments, with the opportunity to undertake Type 3 assessments where your competence allows. General Health & Safety Risk Assessments are also commonly undertaken alongside the FRA, particularly around landlord compliance.

What this opportunity offers:

  • £55,000 – £60,000 salary, dependent on competence, qualifications and experience.
  • Home-based working, travelling directly to client sites.
  • A workload of around 15 assessments per month rather than a high-volume assessment model.
  • Approximately three weeks from site visit to report completion as the normal target.
  • Genuine control over your own diary and how you organise allocated work.
  • Predominantly Fire Risk Assessment work rather than a generalist H&S role with occasional fire exposure.
  • Typical work at an intermediate assessor level, generally involving buildings below approximately 18 metres.
  • Genuine opportunity to develop towards Lead Consultant level.
  • Further qualifications, training and CPD supported.
  • Professional membership costs reimbursed.
  • Pay reviewed as your competence, qualifications and contribution develop rather than being restricted to standard annual increments.
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Pension contribution.
  • Business travel costs covered.

The work:

  • You will be responsible for managing an allocated portfolio of assessments from initial booking through to report completion.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking Type 1 Fire Risk Assessments.
  • Undertaking Type 3 Fire Risk Assessments where competence allows.
  • Completing General Health & Safety Risk Assessments.
  • Assessing landlord compliance within residential and commercial property.
  • Liaising directly with clients to arrange assessments.
  • Managing your own diary and workload.
  • Producing detailed written reports and recommendations.
  • Providing professional Fire and Health & Safety advice.
  • Explaining findings and recommendations to duty holders and other responsible persons.
  • Managing client expectations around timescales and delivery.
  • Participating in report validation and peer-review processes.
  • Maintaining knowledge of relevant legislation, British Standards and industry guidance.
  • Maintaining CPD and professional competence.

You should have:

  • Practical experience undertaking Fire Risk Assessments.
  • A Level 3 Health & Safety qualification such as NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent.
  • A Level 4 Fire / Fire Risk Assessment related qualification or be actively working towards an appropriate Level 4 qualification.
  • The ability to operate at an intermediate Fire Risk Assessor level.
  • Experience managing your own workload and diary.
  • Strong written report-writing ability.
  • Strong client-facing communication.
  • Good knowledge of current fire and safety legislation, guidance and standards.
  • Good IT capability, including Microsoft Office.
