The Firmware Engineer, BMC & BIOS is responsible for supporting customer issue resolution involving server, storage, networking, and AI rack systems throughout New Product Introduction (NPI) and Mass Production (MP).
This position serves as the firmware subject-matter expert within the WYUS Forward Engineering Team, providing first-level technical triage, log analysis, firmware validation, issue reproduction, and cross-functional coordination for problems involving BMC, BIOS/UEFI, NIC firmware, switch firmware, PCIe switches, and add-in cards.
The Firmware Engineer works closely with factory teams, R&D engineering organizations, suppliers, and customers to collect complete technical data, narrow failure conditions, identify appropriate corrective actions, and drive issues through resolution and closure.
The position does not replace the responsibilities of product design, failure analysis, quality, or test ownership teams. Instead, the role ensures that firmware-related issues are properly characterized, supported with complete data, assigned to the appropriate technical owners, and driven toward timely resolution.
Key Responsibilities
Firmware Issue Investigation and Troubleshooting
- Investigate customer, factory, and production issues involving BMC, BIOS/UEFI, NICs, switches, PCIe switches, and add-in cards.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret firmware and system logs to identify abnormal behavior and failure conditions.
- Review BMC event logs, Redfish, IPMI, BIOS/UEFI POST information, serial logs, network device logs, and other relevant diagnostic data.
- Reproduce firmware-related failures whenever possible and narrow issues to the appropriate firmware, hardware, configuration, or environmental condition.
- Verify firmware versions, configurations, settings, and release requirements against approved product baselines.
- Identify missing information and ensure appropriate diagnostic data is collected during the initial investigation.
BMC and BIOS/UEFI Support
- Provide technical support for BMC and BIOS/UEFI-related issues across server and rack-level systems.
- Troubleshoot issues involving system boot, POST, firmware configuration, hardware initialization, management interfaces, and system monitoring.
- Apply working knowledge of Open BMC, Redfish, IPMI, BIOS, UEFI, and PCIe architecture to support system-level troubleshooting.
- Coordinate firmware validation and issue reproduction with appropriate R&D teams.
- Support firmware release verification and configuration checks during NPI and MP.
Networking and PCIe Firmware Support
- Support technical investigations involving NIC firmware, network switches, PCIe switches, and add-in cards.
- Analyze logs and system behavior to determine whether an issue originates from firmware, configuration, hardware, or system integration.
- Coordinate with firmware development teams and external vendors to investigate and resolve component-level issues.
- Support configuration verification and firmware compatibility testing for integrated server and rack systems.
Customer Issue Resolution
- Act as the firmware subject-matter expert for customer escalations within the Forward Engineering organization.
- Participate in technical issue reviews with customers, management, business units, factory teams, and R&D organizations.
- Translate complex technical findings into clear and concise explanations for customers and non-firmware stakeholders.
- Provide accurate status updates, technical findings, next steps, owners, and estimated timelines.
- Maintain professional communication during high-priority and escalated customer issues.
NPI and Mass Production Support
- Provide firmware support throughout NPI phases, including EVT, DVT, and PVT, as well as Mass Production.
- Support factory builds, validation, production testing, and customer qualification activities.
- Work closely with Failure Analysis, Test Engineering, Manufacturing Test Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams.
- Ensure firmware-related issues discovered during production are properly documented, investigated, and escalated.
- Support transition of recurring firmware issues into permanent corrective actions, test improvements, or design changes.
R&D and Vendor Coordination
- Work directly with R&D firmware organizations and component vendors to drive issue resolution.
- Provide complete logs, reproduction steps, system configurations, firmware versions, failure conditions, and other required technical information.
- Clearly define the technical problem and communicate the expected next action to the engineering team responsible.
- Track R&D and vendor actions to ensure issues continue progressing toward closure.
- Escalate unresolved issues when additional resources, management attention, or technical decisions are required.
Debug Tools and Automation
- Develop, improve, or introduce scripts and diagnostic tools that simplify firmware troubleshooting and data collection.
- Use Python, Bash, Linux command-line tools, or similar technologies to automate repetitive debug activities.
- Improve the consistency and completeness of log collection.
- Develop methods that allow factory teams to capture required information correctly during the first investigation.
- Share effective debug methods and tools with engineering and factory teams.
Issue Tracking and Closure
- Maintain ownership of assigned firmware issues from initial identification through resolution and closure.
- Track issue status, technical owners, action items, timelines, and required follow-up.
- Ensure open issues are reviewed regularly with factory and R&D teams.
- Document lessons learned and communicate recurring issues to appropriate owner teams.
- Support improvements to test coverage, manufacturing processes, firmware validation, and product design based on field and factory findings.
Technical Documentation and Communication
- Prepare concise and accurate technical reports, issue summaries, and status updates.
- Document failure symptoms, system configurations, firmware versions, logs, reproduction conditions, analysis, and corrective actions.
- Communicate technical information appropriately to customers, management, factory personnel, and engineering teams.
- Maintain documentation necessary for issue tracking, engineering review, and customer communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in computer engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical field.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant technical experience may be considered.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in firmware development, validation, troubleshooting, or technical debug.
- Experience supporting servers, networking equipment, data-center infrastructure, or similar complex computing systems preferred.
- Experience working with customer issues, manufacturing environments, or NPI programs is highly desirable.
Technical Knowledge
- Working knowledge of BMC technologies, including OpenBMC, Redfish, and IPMI.
- Working knowledge of BIOS/UEFI and system boot processes.
- Understanding of PCIe architecture and device initialization.
- Familiarity with NICs, network switches, PCIe switches, and add-in cards.
- Ability to read and analyze system and firmware logs.
- Working knowledge of Linux command-line environments.
- Experience with scripting using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex hardware/firmware integration issues.
Communication
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to customers, management, factory personnel, and engineering teams.
- Strong documentation and technical reporting skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively across U.S., Mexico, Taiwan, and other international teams.
