What they need
Co-Diagnostics Inc (Co-Dx) is a Salt Lake City–based molecular-diagnostics company developing an at-home and point-of-care PCR platform to detect viruses and other pathogens. We’re looking for a hands-on Firmware Engineer to drive low-level software development on ESP32 and STM32 microcontrollers, write robust C code, and help bring our next-generation diagnostic instruments from prototype to production.
Role & Responsibilities
- Design, implement and maintain embedded firmware in C (and C++) on ESP32 and STM32 platforms
- Integrate and configure on-board peripherals (GPIO, ADC, DAC, PWM), sensors, bar-code readers and communication interfaces (I²C, SPI, UART, CAN)
- Develop and debug FreeRTOS (or similar RTOS)–based tasks and drivers
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to define board-level requirements, review schematics and troubleshoot hardware–software interactions
- Implement secure bootloaders, over-the-air (OTA) update mechanisms, and in-field diagnostics
- Write and maintain unit tests, automated hardware-in-the-loop tests, and CI pipelines for firmware validation
- Produce clear technical documentation: requirements specs, design docs, API guides and user manuals
- Support manufacturing and validation teams by debugging issues on the production line and improving test fixtures
- Follow quality-management procedures to ensure firmware meets FDA/ISO requirements for medical devices
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related field (Master’s a plus)
Experience & Skills
- 3+ years of professional embedded-firmware development in C (C++ experience is a bonus)
- Hands-on experience programming and debugging ESP32 (Espressif IDF) and/or STM32 (STM32CubeMX/HAL)
- Strong understanding of real-time operating systems (FreeRTOS or equivalent) and interrupt-driven architectures
- Proficient with on-chip peripherals: ADC, PWM, UART, SPI, I²C, watchdog timers, DMA
- Familiarity with JTAG/SWD debuggers (e.g., Segger J-Link) and oscilloscopes/logic analyzers for hardware bring-up
- Experience setting up and maintaining Git-based workflows, code reviews, and continuous integration for firmware
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and data-sheets, collaborate with hardware teams on design reviews
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose complex hardware-software interactions
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working in cross-functional teams
Certifications (optional)
- Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE)
- ARM Accredited Engineer
Working Conditions
- On-site in our Salt Lake City office and lab
- Standard business hours, with occasional early or late support during critical hardware bring-up or production ramp
- Remote work is not available for this role
Physical Requirements
- Extended periods at a workbench or computer station
- Ability to lift and manipulate small lab instruments (up to 25 lbs)
- Occasional bending, stooping and fine-motor handling of small components
