Fisheries Research Analyst AI & Computer Vision
Colour grading of the species for quantifying freshness

Location: India / Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience: 5-8 Years
Domain: Fisheries | Aquaculture | Marine & Inland Fisheries
Open to Travel: Yes, as required

About the Role

Wisewit Solutions is looking for a Fisheries Research Analyst AI & Computer Vision to bridge the gap between fisheries domain expertise and AI technology.

The role will involve researching fisheries and aquaculture processes, understanding real-world field challenges, collecting and validating domain data, and working closely with AI/ML and Computer Vision teams to develop practical technology solutions.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of fish/aquaculture species, farming, seafood processing plants, production lines, exports, and fisheries terminology, along with an interest in AI, data and emerging technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Fisheries Domain Research

  • Research Indian marine, inland fisheries and aquaculture practices.
  • Study fish and shrimp species, production processes, farming practices and harvesting operations.
  • Understand fish health, disease indicators, feed, water quality and environmental parameters.
  • Research fisheries value chains, landing centres, farms, processing units and field operations.
  • Identify operational challenges that can potentially be addressed using AI and automation.

AI & Computer Vision Research

  • You will work with AI/ML and Computer Vision teams to translate fisheries requirements into technical inputs.
  • Identify suitable use cases for image-based identification, classification, detection and monitoring.
  • Help define fish/species categories, attributes, visual characteristics and domain-specific classifications.
  • Assist in developing guidelines for image and video data collection.
  • Review and validate AI-generated outputs from a fisheries-domain perspective.
  • Identify false positives, false negatives and domain-specific errors in AI models.
  • Support creation and validation of datasets for Computer Vision and Machine Learning projects.

Data & Dataset Development

  • Collect fisheries-related data from research papers, government sources, field studies and industry sources.
  • Organise and clean structured and unstructured datasets.
  • Support image/video dataset creation and annotation activities.
  • Develop domain-specific taxonomies, labels, metadata and reference datasets.
  • Verify the accuracy and consistency of annotated data.
  • Maintain documentation and version-controlled research references.

Field Research & Validation

  • Conduct field visits to farms, hatcheries, fishing locations, landing centres and processing facilities.
  • Interact with fishermen, farmers, aquaculture professionals and other domain experts.
  • Document actual field processes and operational challenges.
  • Collect images, videos, observations and other relevant field data.
  • Validate whether AI solutions work effectively under real-world conditions.

Research & Documentation

  • Conduct literature reviews and analyse scientific publications.
  • Track developments in fisheries technology, AI applications and aquaculture.
  • Prepare research reports, use-case documents and domain briefs.
  • Create clear documentation for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Present research findings to AI, engineering and business teams.

AI Use Cases You May Work On

Depending on the project, the role may contribute to areas such as:

  • Fish and shrimp species identification
  • Fish size/length estimation
  • Fish counting and biomass estimation
  • Fish quality assessment
  • Disease or abnormality detection
  • Aquaculture pond monitoring
  • Fish grading and sorting
  • Fish catch classification
  • Image/video-based fisheries monitoring
  • Farm productivity analysis
  • Fisheries supply-chain intelligence
  • Computer Vision-based inspection systems

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Fisheries Science, Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Zoology, Aquatic Sciences or a related field.
  • 15 years of experience in fisheries, aquaculture, fisheries research, field research or a related domain.
  • Strong understanding of Indian fisheries/aquaculture practices.
  • Good research, analytical and documentation skills.
  • Strong Excel/Google Sheets skills.
  • Ability to interpret scientific papers, research reports and technical information.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

Good to Have

  • Exposure to AI/ML, Computer Vision or Data Science.
  • Experience with image/video data collection or annotation.
  • Knowledge of Python, SQL, Power BI or similar analytical tools.
  • Familiarity with GIS/geospatial data.
  • Experience working with fisheries datasets.
  • Knowledge of fish/shrimp species identification.
  • Experience conducting field surveys or stakeholder interviews.
  • Understanding of AI model evaluation or dataset validation.

Who Would Be a Good Fit?

We are looking for someone who can say:

I understand fisheries, I understand the problem in the field, and I can explain that problem clearly enough for an AI/engineering team to build a solution.”

You don’t need to be an AI engineer. However, you should be curious about AI and comfortable working closely with technical teams.
