What they need

Start your career in a skilled trade with MiTek – Fitting and Machining Apprentice

MiTek is a global construction technology leader, providing software, engineered products, services and automated solutions to the building industry. We’re part of the Berkshire Hathaway group and operate across more than 100 countries.

In New Zealand, our East Tamaki manufacturing site produces metal connectors for the building industry. Our team includes experienced toolmakers, die setters and maintenance engineers who keep our production equipment running safely, reliably and efficiently.

The opportunity

We’re looking for an Apprentice Toolmaker to join our workshop team and learn the trade alongside experienced tradespeople.

This is a hands-on opportunity to develop your skills in fitting, machining, tooling and mechanical maintenance, while working towards your trade qualification through an approved apprenticeship programme.

You’ll learn on the job and through your formal trade training, with support from experienced people who will help you build your technical skills and confidence.

Your day-to-day work will include:

  • Learning to use workshop tools, machinery and equipment safely
  • Developing your skills in fitting, machining and mechanical maintenance
  • Assisting with the repair and maintenance of production tooling
  • Learning to operate manual lathes and milling machines
  • Fabricating and repairing mechanical components
  • Taking accurate measurements and working from engineering drawings
  • Supporting experienced toolmakers and tradespeople with more complex work
  • Working with our Die Setters and production team to identify and resolve tooling issues
  • Learning how tools and dies are made, maintained and repaired
  • Completing your trade certificate and apprenticeship training
  • Completing MiTek training and competency requirements

About you

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with their hands, figuring out how things work and learning a skilled trade.

You’ll ideally have:

  • A relevant pre-trade qualification
  • NCEA Level 2, including Maths and English
  • Good mechanical aptitude and an interest in machinery and how things work
  • A practical, hands-on approach
  • Basic maths skills and an ability to work with measurements
  • Good attention to detail and an appreciation of the importance of accuracy
  • An understanding of basic health and safety
  • A willingness to learn, take direction and ask questions
  • A logical approach to solving problems
  • A strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Reliability — you turn up, on time, ready to work and keen to get stuck in
  • The ability to work well with experienced tradespeople and as part of a team

You don't need to know everything already. What matters most is your attitude, mechanical aptitude, reliability and willingness to learn. We'll help you develop the technical skills you need to become a qualified toolmaker.

Hours of work

Our factory operates Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 3.30pm, with occasional afternoon shifts when production requirements increase and occasional Saturday overtime.

Why MiTek?

You'll be joining an established manufacturing team where you can learn from experienced toolmakers and engineers while gaining practical, on-the-job experience.

This is an opportunity to earn while you learn, complete your apprenticeship and develop a skilled trade that can lead to a long-term career in toolmaking and manufacturing.

If you're practical, reliable, curious about how things work and ready to learn, we'd love to hear from you!

Other offers great for you!
