What they need

Fleet & Workshop Manager
Tarbotton Land & Civil | Ashburton

Tarbotton Land & Civil are looking for an experienced Fleet & Workshop Manager to take ownership of the performance, reliability and lifecycle management of its growing fleet of high-value civil contracting assets.

This is a senior, hands-on role combining strategic asset management with operational workshop leadership. You’ll be responsible for ensuring plant and equipment is available, reliable and fit for purpose, while identifying smarter ways to manage assets, improve workshop processes and maximise return on investment.

A key focus will be moving the function forward – strengthening fleet lifecycle planning, improving procurement and disposal decisions, and driving the adoption of digital systems that provide better visibility, information and efficiencies across workshop operations.

The role
Working closely with the General Manager, you’ll be responsible for:

  • Leading and developing the workshop team, including heavy diesel mechanics, fabricators and apprentices
  • Driving strategic fleet lifecycle planning to maximise asset performance, utilisation and return on investment
  • Improving procurement and disposal processes, ensuring commercially sound decisions across the asset lifecycle
  • Identifying and implementing digital systems and technology to streamline workshop processes, scheduling and reporting
  • Overseeing preventative maintenance, breakdowns and defect management to maximise fleet availability and minimise downtime
  • Improving workshop workflow, productivity, turnaround times and overall operational efficiency
  • Managing inventory, suppliers, external contractors and associated purchasing and cost controls
  • Ensuring plant, machinery and workshop operations meet relevant health, safety and regulatory requirements

About you
You’ll be an experienced fleet, asset or workshop leader who understands heavy plant and machinery but can also bring a commercial and strategic mindset to the role.

You’ll be comfortable challenging existing processes, embracing technology and identifying better ways of working. Just as importantly, you’ll be someone who enjoys staying close to the operation and leading from the front.
You’ll bring:

  • 5+ years’ experience in a senior maintenance or asset management role within civil contracting, heavy transport, heavy equipment or a similar industry;
  • A relevant trade or tertiary qualification;
  • Proven experience managing high-value fleet or assets, including utilising relevant software to strategically plan the full lifecycle of the asset;
  • Commercial and financial acumen along with proven supplier negotiation skills;
  • The ability to lead, engage and develop a technical team.

This is an opportunity to have a real influence on how Tarbotton Land & Civil manages a significant and growing asset base. If you’re ready to take ownership of a key business function and help shape its future, we’d love to hear from you.
