Flight Software Engineer

On-site in Los Angeles, CA

Our client is an innovative, rapidly growing aerospace organization developing advanced spacecraft for technically demanding missions. With major new flight programs creating significant growth, the team is expanding its engineering organization and looking for a hands-on Flight Software Engineer who wants meaningful ownership of software that will operate in space. This is an opportunity to work alongside highly accomplished spacecraft engineers, tackle difficult mission problems, and see your code move from development and hardware testing into operational flight systems.

This Role Offers:

  • Direct involvement in active spacecraft and flight programs where your engineering contributions have high visibility and meaningful mission impact.
  • Significant hands-on ownership spanning software architecture, embedded development, hardware integration, verification, and flight-ready implementation.
  • A collaborative, in-person engineering environment where software, electrical, systems, payload, and spacecraft engineers work closely together.
  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes healthcare coverage, paid time off, retirement benefits with company matching, parental leave, and additional employee benefits.

Focus:

  • Develop and evolve embedded flight software responsible for critical spacecraft computing and hardware interactions.
  • Develop software solutions that support critical operational capabilities and integrated system functions.
  • Create and troubleshoot low-level software interfaces connecting flight computers with FPGA-based electronics, GPIO-controlled devices, and other spacecraft hardware.
  • Engineer dependable startup, software recovery, memory handling, storage, and update capabilities designed for mission-critical operation.
  • Build and maintain automated software integration, verification, and development workflows that improve reliability throughout the engineering lifecycle.
  • Conduct extensive software verification using spacecraft test hardware, representative avionics environments, and flight units.
  • Work closely with electrical, systems, payload, and other engineering disciplines to bring spacecraft subsystems together successfully.
  • Document software architecture, technical decisions, verification outcomes, and system behavior throughout development.
  • Provide technical guidance when appropriate while remaining deeply engaged in coding, debugging, integration, and testing.

Skill Set:

  • 5 or more years of core flight software experience, with substantial hands-on spacecraft code development, integration, and testing.
  • Solid software development experience across multiple programming languages and Linux-based environments.
  • Hands-on experience connecting software with embedded hardware, interfaces, and related system components.
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Candidate must possess, or be willing and eligible to obtain, a U.S. Department of Defense Top Secret security clearance.
  • Practical experience developing and supporting essential functionality within embedded computing environments.
  • Familiarity with spacecraft flight software frameworks such as F Prime or cFS, Git-based development, CI/CD, and automated testing practices.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, with experience validating software on flight hardware, flatsat, hardware-in-the-loop, or comparable test environments.
