What they need

Description

Job Type: Full Time, Non-Exempt Non-Bargaining

Location: 828 Broadway, Strand’s flagship location by Union Square

Schedule: 40 hours, 5 days per week including both Saturdays and Sundays. Floor managers at our Union Square location typically work shifts from 9:00AM-6:00PM if opening the floor or from 1:00PM-10:00PM when closing the floor. Weekly schedules are based on business needs. Currently we are in search of those comfortable working closing shifts.

Strand Bookstore is looking to hire a Floor Manager to help support our flagship location. We are seeking individuals who are thoughtful, organized, driven to offer excellent customer service and who are eager to work around books.

As one of the Floor Managers at Strand, you will play a crucial role in leading our team of booksellers as well as creating memorable experiences for our devoted customers. You will find yourself wearing many hats, from helping to balance operations of the sales floor to ensuring consistent and valuable customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining daily schedules for all booksellers across several floors of the store, assuring that there is proper coverage at all high traffic areas and that the priority tasks for the day are accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Assist with and/or lead counting down of cash tills and gathering together the daily deposit, including making bank runs and change orders.
  • Processing payroll for direct reports and tracking time and attendance for all reporting staff.
  • Paying attention to shelving and section maintenance needs across your assigned floor, reporting any issues to relevant departments or staff.
  • Paying attention to the growth and development of both newly hired as well as tenured booksellers, assuring that staff are learning processes effectively and efficiently, all while maintaining positive customer service.
  • Delivering reviews for staff as needed and on a yearly basis.
  • Setting the tone: Floor Managers should always look to set the tone for the day, making sure to set expectations and provide reasonable and achievable goals for staff.
  • Managing by walking the sales floor: This means making yourself available and assigning tasks to staff so that you as the manager are available for both customers and booksellers at a moment’s notice. Consistently walking the floor and avoiding remaining in one place long makes sure that in a store as big as Strand, you as the manager are paying attention to as much as you can.

Competency & Position Requirements

  • At least 1-2 years of management and/or leadership experience in a high volume retail or food service environment is ideal, with a preference for those who have managed in bookstore or library environments.
  • Cash handling and inventory experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team while also taking authority as necessary.
  • Someone who looks to give and receive constructive feedback and understands that communication is key to growth and development.
  • Experience with coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Strong customer service skills and a love of helping customers is a must.
  • Sound judgment and a decisive attitude that allows you to manage any customer or employee concerns in a calm, timely and respectful manner.
  • Experience using bookstore software such as Basil or other similar programs is a plus but not required.
  • A love of books and a demonstrated love of bookselling/independent bookstores.

Benefits

  • Paid Time Off
  • Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA)
  • 401(k)
  • Commuter Benefits
  • A dangerous store discount

About Strand Book Store

In 1927, twenty-five-year-old Ben Bass opened the Strand Bookstore on Fourth Avenue, then part of “Book Row,” a six-block stretch in Greenwich Village that once housed forty-eight bookstores. Today, The Strand is the largest independent bookstore in New York City. It carries more than 2.5 million used, new, and rare books, ranging from classic literature and current releases to out-of-print titles, art monographs, and signed first editions. You can visit us at our flagship store in Union Square, our beloved kiosks in Central Park, our Upper West Side location on Columbus Avenue, or our newest store at Lincoln Center.

Wherever you find us, we’re proud to be the city’s bookstore, a place where books are loved and book lovers of all kinds are always welcome.
