As a member of the Dolby team, you’ll see and hear the results of your work everywhere, from movie theaters to smartphones. We continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy entertainment worldwide. To do that, we need the absolute best talent. Based in Shenzhen, China and reporting to the Sr. Manager, Forensic Engineering in our San Francisco headquarters, the Forensic Engineer is a key contributor to global compliance and enforcement.  This individual will work closely with our IP Protection group to promote compliance and prevent licensing and trademark infringement. The Forensic Engineer will be responsible for performing analysis of available information and guiding field audits and enforcement activites, leveraging technical expertise and partnering with colleagues as needed. The position will also act as a technical resource across the larger IPP organization and external partners.

Essential Job Functions:

Product Testing and Analysis

  • Test consumer electronics, mobile devices, PCs, automotive infotainment systems, broadcast equipment, and software for use of Dolby Technologies and potential infringement.
  • Conduct device teardowns, component identification, signal‑flow tracing, and multimedia framework evaluation.
  • Analyze Android/iOS devices and applications for compliance with Dolby technology requirements and ecosystem standards.
  • Partner with cross‑functional teams to investigate potential infringement issues.
  • Research, identify, procure, and test samples to detect infringement, validate technology usage, and gather intelligence.

Audit support

  • Pre-audit analysis – Perform product analysis for companies selected for audits, including review of available internal and external data. Research and analyze publicly available information to identify products using licensed technology.
  • Provide on-site and off-site technical support during audit fieldwork, including product verification, sample/spec testing, and guidance to the auditors.
  • Post‑audit analysis: Perform product testing and technology assessments to support negotiation, enforcement actions, and remediation planning.
  • Identify process improvements, including automation opportunities, to increase accuracy, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Use AI‑enabled data analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and systemic patterns of non‑compliance across product categories and markets.

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of experience in reverse engineering, compliance engineering, failure investigation, product analysis, or intellectual property protection.
  • Familiarity with audio codecs and multimedia frameworks (e.g., Android media stack, FFmpeg, DirectShow, or similar).
  • Hands‑on experience with product teardown and understanding of key electrical components and subsystems.
  • Strong attention to detail and a thorough, methodical approach to problem‑solving and documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with companies in the APAC region; Mandarin or Cantonese language skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously across multiple concurrent projects with a globally distributed team.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and prioritize competing priorities.
  • Occasional international travel required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience testing consumer audio/video products such as TVs, set‑top boxes, mobile phones, tablets, PCs, or automotive infotainment systems.
  • Experience with software analysis, reverse‑engineering tools, or embedded systems debugging.
  • Experience testing for third‑party IP or licensing compliance.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience performing data analysis and identifying trends.
