What they need

Seeking Fractional Controller / CFO – Aviation / Flight School Business

We are looking for an experienced Fractional Controller / CFO to provide financial oversight and guidance to an established, profitable aviation business.

This is not a full-time position and is not intended to replace our existing administrative and accounting staff. We are looking for a senior financial professional who can establish strong accounting disciplines, oversee our financial reporting, and help ensure that our books accurately reflect the financial condition of the business.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Review and oversee daily cash, bank, merchant-processing, and credit-card reconciliations performed by our internal team.
  • Ensure all balance-sheet accounts are properly reconciled and supported, including cash, accounts receivable, undeposited funds, fixed assets, leases, loans, and other material accounts.
  • Review the integration and transaction flow between Flight Schedule Pro and QuickBooks and help identify and resolve reconciliation or accounting issues.
  • Ensure the business is maintaining appropriate accrual-basis accounting.
  • Establish and oversee a disciplined monthly close process, with a goal of producing accurate financial statements within approximately 2–3 business days following month-end.
  • Review the monthly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cash Flows for accuracy and completeness.
  • Meet with ownership monthly to review financial results, explain significant changes or issues, and provide practical financial insight.
  • Work with and coach our existing staff so they become stronger at daily reconciliations, transaction coding, balance-sheet management, and accounting procedures.
  • Coordinate with our outside CPA as appropriate for tax and year-end matters.
  • Identify accounting weaknesses, unusual balances, unreconciled items, or process gaps before they become larger problems.

Ideal background:

We are looking for someone with strong Controller, CFO, or senior accounting experience, preferably working with privately held small or middle-market businesses.

The right person should have:

  • Strong knowledge of QuickBooks and accrual accounting
  • Exceptional balance-sheet and reconciliation skills
  • Experience reviewing merchant-processing and credit-card settlement activity
  • Ability to understand integrations between operational systems and the general ledger
  • Experience developing accounting procedures and internal controls
  • Ability to explain financial information clearly to non-accountants
  • A practical, hands-on approach rather than simply producing reports
  • CPA or significant Controller/CFO experience preferred

Experience with aviation, flight schools, transportation, equipment-intensive businesses, or businesses with significant fixed assets and leases would be helpful but is not required.

We expect the engagement may require approximately 16–20 hours per month during the initial transition and cleanup period, with the ongoing requirement potentially declining to approximately 8–12 hours per month once processes and controls are firmly established.

We would prefer someone who is local and available for occasional in-person meetings, although we will consider an exceptional candidate who works remotely.

This would be an excellent engagement for an experienced fractional CFO/controller with an existing fractional practice or for a seasoned Controller/CFO who has retired from a full-time position but would like to remain professionally active.

We prefer to structure the engagement around a predictable monthly retainer rather than hourly billing.

If you are interested, or know someone who would be a strong fit, please send a resume or a brief description of your experience and current fractional practice.
