Freelance Architect

This opportunity is for a skilled architect to design a 75 m² extension for a classic brick bungalow in Auckland, New Zealand. The project involves creating a modern mid-century inspired lounge and an additional bedroom, ensuring the new spaces harmonize with the existing structure. The ideal candidate will have a strong sense of design, an understanding of residential architecture, and the ability to deliver creative solutions that respect the original character of the home. Remote applicants based in New Zealand are welcome, as are those open to travel for site visits.

Responsibilities

• Develop conceptual and schematic designs for a residential extension, including a lounge and bedroom
• Ensure the extension aligns with a modern mid-century aesthetic and complements the existing bungalow
• Prepare detailed architectural drawings and documentation suitable for council submission and construction
• Collaborate with clients to refine design direction and incorporate feedback
• Coordinate with engineers, consultants, and contractors as needed
• Advise on materials, finishes, and sustainable design options
• Conduct site visits (if required) to assess existing conditions and oversee project progress

Skills And Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or equivalent qualification
• Proven experience designing residential extensions or renovations
• Strong portfolio demonstrating modern and mid-century design sensibilities
• Proficiency in architectural design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp)
• Knowledge of New Zealand building codes and council submission processes
• Excellent communication and client collaboration skills
• Ability to work independently and manage project timelines
• Based in New Zealand, with flexibility for remote work and occasional travel to Auckland
