Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Freelance Model Maker to join our team on a project basis.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in creating precision models and prototypes using a variety of materials and fabrication techniques, with a strong understanding of both traditional craftsmanship and modern rapid prototyping technologies.

We ideally would like someone who can hit the ground running.

Key Responsibilities

• Interpret technical drawings, CAD files, and design specifications to create accurate physical models and prototypes
• Fabricate models using various materials including, wood, metal, plastics, resins, and composite materials
• Perform finishing work such as sanding, painting, polishing, Spray, Finishing SLA’s, Vac Cast, Silicone Tooling, Finishing SLA’s and assembly to achieve high-quality surface finishes
• Collaborate with designers, engineers, and project managers to understand project requirements and deliver on specifications
• Problem-solve fabrication challenges and suggest material or process improvements
• Ensure models are delivered on schedule and meet quality standards
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace following health and safety protocols

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience as a model maker, prototype fabricator, or similar role
• Strong knowledge of materials, fabrication techniques, and finishing processes
• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and CAD files

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar)
• Background in product design, industrial design, or engineering
• Knowledge of various 3D printing technologies (FDM, SLA)
• Experience with molding and casting techniques
• Portfolio demonstrating range of model making work

• Contract Type: Freelance/Project-based
• Location: [On-site] On the train line from London to Cambridge (Whittlesford Parkway Station 2 minutes walk away)
• Rate: Competitive, based on experience
