What they need

Superbalist.com is South Africa’s leading fashion and lifestyle retailer, operating across a growing portfolio of online and physical stores . We’re obsessive about building a high-performance, collaborative culture that delivers results fast. We think big, move quickly, take ownership and strive to win, always with our customer at the heart of what we do.

We’re lucky to work alongside some of the sharpest minds in the industry — building a world-class brand across digital and physical platforms.

Purpose of the role:

As a Full Stack Frontend Engineer you’ll build the experience our customers see and use every day – from fast, polished Nuxt front ends to the APIs and services that power them. The role leans into the frontend space, so you’ll bring real depth in Nuxt or Next.js, along with the back-end skills to own features end to end.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build and ship features end to end – from Nuxt components and pages to the APIs and services behind them.
  • Write code and tests, and push to production independently.
  • Build fast, accessible, responsive user interfaces, with a close eye on performance and Core Web Vitals.
  • Design, build and integrate APIs and back-end services.
  • Turn functional requirements into detailed technical analysis and design specifications.
  • Design system-level code and deliver significant team-level projects.
  • Review code and give feedback that lifts the whole team.
  • Create and run unit and integration test plans.
  • Take part in functional and technical specification reviews.
  • Investigate and resolve defects across the stack.
  • Monitor the services and systems you own, and act on what you find.
  • Work across teams to deliver large, cross-cutting projects.
  • Use AI to automate tasks and build tools that help the team move faster.
  • Continuously improve our architecture, code design, performance, scalability and security.
  • Work with AI in your daily engineering loop – AI-assisted coding, automating tasks, building internal tools – to ship faster without dropping quality.
  • Design and drive agentic workflows: break work into tasks an agent can run, review and correct its output, and know where to keep a human in the loop.
  • Builds systems to help contribute to the Engineering Department

Minimum Requirements and Experience:

  • 3–5 years’ professional software development experience, with a strong front-end focus on production web applications.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Commercial experience with Nuxt (Vue) or Next.js (React).
  • Back-end experience building APIs and services with Node.js.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and SQL.
  • A solid grasp of HTTP, caching and serving web applications from the edge.
  • Sound knowledge of data structures, algorithms, code design and security best practice.
  • Practical experience with automated testing and test-driven development.
  • The ability to build solutions that scale without adding technical debt, and experience with performance tuning.
  • Solid experience with AI tools, frameworks, passionate about this bleeding edge technology.
  • Solid experience with Git (GitHub preferred) and issue tracking tools (Jira preferred).
  • Hands-on fluency with AI-assisted development as a normal part of your workflow (e.g. Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot), plus the judgement to know where AI helps and where it doesn't – spotting a plausible-but-wrong answer and verifying before shipping.

Skills, knowledge & abilities

  • JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Nuxt (Next.js experience counts)
  • Node.js
  • Front-end engineering principles and best practice
  • Modern frameworks and build tools
  • AI-assisted development (and a feel for agentic tooling)
  • AI Engineering – a big plus for this role
  • Go – a big plus for this role
  • Python, PHP
  • Linux, Kubernetes and Google Cloud
  • Cloudflare or other edge/CDN platforms
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools or building AI features
  • Built something with LLMs, agents, MCP, RAG or evals – even a side project or internal tool – and a point of view on how agentic tooling is changing engineering
  • E-commerce experience
