What they need
The opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Assistant Estate Gardener to join a small team caring for a beautifully maintained private estate in a rural setting near Banbury. This is a varied, practical role combining ornamental horticulture, lawn care and wider grounds maintenance.
The successful candidate will support the day-to-day care and continued improvement of the gardens and grounds. The role would suit a capable, hands-on gardener who enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in presentation and is equally comfortable caring for planting schemes or operating larger machinery.
Key responsibilities
· Prepare beds and borders for planting, including soil cultivation.
· Carry out greenhouse work, including propagation, seed sowing, pricking out, potting on and watering.
· Plant and establish seasonal bulbs, annual displays, and other ornamental plants.
· Maintain lawns using ride-on and pedestrian mowers, strimming and edging.
· Undertake routine pruning and the cutting of formal and informal hedges.
· Weeding, mulching, and maintaining herbaceous borders to a high standard.
· Leaf clearance and other seasonal garden and grounds tasks.
· Support wider grounds and maintenance work when required.
About you
You'll be a dependable and motivated team player with a positive attitude! It's important that you can organise your daily tasks and keep up high standards, all while enjoying the collaboration within our small team—without needing constant supervision. We believe in a friendly, supportive environment where everyone can thrive!
· Proven practical gardening or grounds-maintenance experience.
· Confidence operating ride-on mowers and common horticultural machinery.
· A sound understanding of plant care and routine seasonal garden work.
· Good attention to detail and pride in the finished appearance of the estate.
· Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors throughout the seasons.
· A dependable, respectful and discreet manner suited to a private-estate environment.
· A full UK driving licence is preferred; reliable transport is important due to the rural location.
Relevant horticultural qualifications would be welcomed but are not essential where an applicant can demonstrate strong practical ability and a genuine interest in horticulture.
What we offer
· A varied and rewarding full-time role within a well-maintained private estate.
· The opportunity to work across ornamental gardens, lawns and wider grounds.
· A supportive small-team environment with scope to contribute ideas and develop practical skills.
