What they need

DevOps Manager – Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

Role Summary

We are looking for a DevOps Manager to own the reliability, observability, and cost

efficiency of our applications on Google Cloud Platform. The role covers end-to-end

responsibility for application usage monitoring, cloud cost management (FinOps), CI/CD

pipeline setup and governance, centralized logging, and billing oversight. You will lead a

team of DevOps/Cloud engineers and work closely with application development, security,

and infrastructure teams.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Application & Usage Monitoring
  • Design and implement monitoring for application health, performance, and usage using

Google Cloud Monitoring, Prometheus/Grafana, or equivalent tools.

  • Define and track SLIs/SLOs, uptime, latency, error rates, and capacity utilization across

environments.

  • Build dashboards for application usage trends (API call volumes, transaction

throughput, active users) for engineering and business stakeholders.

  • Set up proactive alerting (Cloud Monitoring alerts, PagerDuty/Opsgenie integration) and

drive reduction of alert noise.

  • Conduct capacity planning and performance reviews based on usage data.
  1. Cloud Cost Management & FinOps
  • Own GCP cost visibility: set up cost dashboards by project, service, environment, and

team using GCP Billing reports, BigQuery billing export, and Looker Studio.

  • Implement labeling/tagging standards for accurate cost attribution and

chargeback/showback.

  • Identify and drive cost-optimization initiatives: rightsizing VMs/GKE nodes, committed

use discounts (CUDs), spot/preemptible instances, storage lifecycle policies, and idleresource

cleanup.

  • Set up budgets, alerts, and quotas to prevent cost overruns; publish monthly cost

review reports with variance analysis.

  • Forecast cloud spend and support annual budgeting for cloud infrastructure.
  1. CI/CD Setup & Governance
  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, GitLab

CI, or Jenkins, deploying to GKE, Cloud Run, App Engine, or Compute Engine.

  • Standardize build, test, security-scan, and deployment stages across teams

(SAST/DAST, container image scanning, artifact management via Artifact Registry).

  • Implement deployment strategies: blue-green, canary, and rollback automation.
  • Enforce Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) with code review and drift

detection.

  • Manage environment promotion workflows (Dev → QA → UAT → Prod) with appropriate

approvals and audit trails.

  1. Logging & Observability Setup
  • Architect centralized logging using Cloud Logging with log sinks, routing, retention

policies, and export to BigQuery/Cloud Storage for long-term analysis.

  • Define structured logging standards for application teams and ensure adoption.
  • Set up log-based metrics and alerts for security and operational events.
  • Ensure log retention and access controls meet compliance and audit requirements.
  • Integrate logs with SIEM tooling where required.
  1. Billing Administration
  • Administer GCP billing accounts, projects, and IAM around billing (Billing Admin/Viewer

roles).

  • Reconcile monthly GCP invoices against usage; coordinate with Finance on accruals and

payments.

  • Manage billing account hierarchy, project-to-billing mapping, and sub-account

structures for multiple business units.

  • Liaise with Google/partner account teams on pricing, credits, CUD purchases, and

support plans.

  1. Team Leadership & Governance
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of DevOps/Cloud engineers; manage on-call rotations

and incident response processes.

  • Define runbooks, SOPs, and DR/backup procedures; drive post-incident reviews (RCA)

with corrective actions.

  • Partner with Security/InfoSec on IAM hygiene, VPC/network controls, and audit

readiness.

  • Report DevOps KPIs (deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR, change failure rate, cost

per transaction) to leadership.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of hands-on GCP experience: GKE, Compute Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud Build,

Cloud Monitoring, Cloud Logging, IAM, VPC, and BigQuery (billing export/analysis).

  • Strong experience with CI/CD tooling (Cloud Build, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or GitHub

Actions) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes/GKE).

  • Proven track record in cloud cost optimization / FinOps practices on GCP.
  • Infrastructure as Code expertise — Terraform strongly preferred.
  • Scripting proficiency: Python, Bash, or Go.
  • Experience setting up centralized logging, monitoring, and alerting at scale.
  • Experience managing GCP billing accounts and working with Finance teams.
  • 2+ years leading or mentoring a DevOps/SRE team.

Preferred / Good to Have

  • GCP certifications: Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer, Professional Cloud Architect, or

FinOps Certified Practitioner.

  • Experience in regulated environments (BFSI/GovTech) with audit, compliance, and

data-residency requirements.

  • Exposure to multi-cloud or hybrid setups.
  • Familiarity with service mesh (Istio/Anthos Service Mesh), secrets management (Secret

Manager/Vault), and policy-as-code (OPA).

  • Experience with SIEM integration and security monitoring.

Key Performance Indicators (First 12 Months)

  • 99.9%+ availability against defined SLOs for critical applications.
  • 15–20% reduction in GCP spend through optimization initiatives (baseline-dependent).
  • CI/CD pipelines standardized across all active product teams with < 1 day lead time for

changes.

  • Centralized logging live for all production workloads with compliant retention.
  • Monthly cost and usage reporting operational with < 5% unexplained invoice variance.
