Openings for GED/HSE Instructors Part-Time - Fall 2026

The Lehman College Adult Learning Center (ALC) is an adult literacy program in New York City. We are in the Bronx, on the Lehman College campus. Every year, the ALC helps approximately 500 students with free classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency (HSE/GED), and English for Speakers of Other Languages. The ALC also offers certifiable courses in nursing assistance and hospitality industry. The ALC is dedicated to meeting the educational, workforce development, and personal needs of adult learners in the Bronx, especially those with disabilities. The ALC provides access to services that include but are not limited to educational case management, life skills management, speech and hearing assessment and support, and mental health screenings. We are a supportive team of dedicated professionals and staff working together to give our students the best possible outcomes within a diverse, focused, and engaging community of learning.

We currently have openings for both Math and Reading/Writing instructors at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.

RESPONISILITIES

• Create a student-centered, engaging learning environment
• Develop theme-based, contextualized lessons
• Assess student content knowledge and tailor instruction to maximize understanding and test outcomes
• Participate in staff meetings and training
• Take part in a minimum of 14 hours of staff development annually, with approved providers
• Maintain and update all student records
• Work well independently and in collaboration with other staff

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree in related field and a minimum of two years with adult learners
• Comfortable teaching high school Math, ELA, Social Studies, and/or Science
• Able to incorporate technology and test taking strategies into lesson planning
• Confidence managing a classroom
• Excellent communication skills
• Commitment to racial, economic, and social justice
• Culturally sensitive
• Flexibility
