What they need

About the role

Trident Electronics is looking for a hands-on General Electronics Service Technician to join our New Plymouth team. You will repair, test and service common electronic and light electrical equipment in our workshop and at client locations across the Taranaki region.

This role suits someone who enjoys practical fault finding and repair work across a range of everyday equipment. It is not a heavy industrial electrical, high-voltage, large-scale automation or electrical installation role.

What you'll be doing

  • Diagnose faults in general electronic and light electrical equipment using multimeters, test equipment and service information.
  • Repair equipment by replacing components, wiring, connectors, circuit boards and other serviceable parts where appropriate.
  • Complete soldering, rework, assembly and basic electrical testing to a safe and professional standard.
  • Carry out servicing and preventative maintenance to improve reliability and extend equipment life.
  • Test repaired equipment and confirm it is safe, functional and ready to return to the customer.
  • Explain faults, repairs and maintenance requirements clearly to customers.
  • Record diagnosis, work completed, parts used and test results accurately.
  • Maintain an organised workshop, look after tools and follow health and safety procedures.
  • Order replacement parts and help maintain stock of commonly used components.
  • Travel to client sites in the Taranaki region when required.

The type of experience we are looking for

Our work covers a wide range of common electronic and light electrical equipment, including microwaves, amplifiers, Hi-Fi stereos, speakers, keyboards, TVs, e-bikes, scooters, projectors, UHF radios, controllers, gaming consoles such as PlayStation and Xbox, and drones, to name a few. Experience with similar consumer, commercial or light-duty equipment, power supplies, control boards, cabling or components is also valuable.

This list is intended to show the practical variety of the role. Please update it with the equipment Trident services most often and remove any examples that do not apply.

What we're looking for

  • At least three years of hands-on experience repairing, servicing or maintaining general electronic or light electrical equipment.

  • A qualification in electronics, electrical servicing, appliance repair or a related technical field is preferred.

  • Confident use of a multimeter and other basic electronic measurement and testing equipment.

  • Practical knowledge of components, circuit boards, wiring, connectors and soldering.

  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability.

  • A careful, methodical approach and pride in the quality of completed repairs.

  • The ability to work independently, manage jobs and meet agreed timeframes.

  • Clear communication and a customer-focused approach.

  • A full driver's licence and willingness to visit client sites in Taranaki.

This role is not primarily about

  • High-voltage electrical work.
  • Large industrial plant or heavy electrical maintenance.
  • Major electrical installation projects.
  • PLC, automation or complex industrial control engineering.
  • Large-scale telecommunications or infrastructure systems.

What we offer

  • $35–$44 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Full-time work based in New Plymouth, with a mix of workshop and local client-site work.
  • Ongoing training and development.
  • A supportive team and modern workshop facilities.
  • Quality diagnostic equipment and opportunities to broaden your repair skills.
  • Career progression within a growing local business.
  • Employee discounts and flexible scheduling where practical.
