What they need
Starting Strength Austin is hiring a full-time General Manager, or as we prefer to call it, our Head of Concierge Service, for our two Austin-area gyms: one off of West Anderson and MoPac and the other in Sunset Valley. This role is for someone who has run a team at a premium restaurant, hotel, club, etc, and enjoys delivering a high-level experience. We are looking for a rare personality type: someone with endless positive energy who enjoys creating memorable experiences, building meaningful relationships, and making any bad situation a good one.
Fitness-industry experience is not required but we'd love for you to do the Starting Strength program and to learn how to Coach our method.
The Role
- You'll work directly with the owners of the gym. My sister and I own the gyms and work remotely (from Idaho). We'd love to have you visit us at the end of the interview process.
- Goals and KPIs are simple and clear, and you have autonomy to figure out the best way to achieve them, with our help as needed. - The outcome you're responsible for is Coaches who stay and enjoy their work, and Members who stay and are happy with their results and their experience.
- You can get creative. Let me know what you'd like to do, what it costs, and the result you expect. If it the ROI potential and risk make sense, we'll do it.
- You have our full support on whatever you need help with: Member escalations, scheduling issues, etc.
- Your team is the top 1% of the fitness industry. Everyone here was *hired* for intelligence, emotional intelligence, and desire to serve others, and are a joy to be around.
- My job is to support you to help you do your best work. Your job is to support the team so they can do their best work and to build a thriving community among the Members.
We make a meaningful impact on the quality of life of our Members. Our YouTube channel has dozens of case studies: a 70 year old who had been bedridden for almost a year and stood on her own within two weeks of starting, a 49 year old here in Austin with torn ligaments in both knees squatting 305lb, a physician who reversed his type II diabetes, and a former Olympic skier who reversed osteoporosis at 70.
Our premise is: your quality of life is better when you're stronger. Male, female, young, or old. Getting stronger is the most efficient way to improve performance in daily tasks (or a sport), improve body composition, and improve overall health. Our program is simple. Train three days per week, do three exercises per day, and add a little bit of weight as often as possible, under the guidance of your Coach, and noticeable changes usually start by week three.
We have two values: Technical Excellence, which means there is a clear rationale for everything we do and we do it to the highest standard. And Concierge Service, which means going out of our way to anticipate the needs of our Members, so they get an excellent experience and the best possible outcome.
The three most important parts of the job are to build excellent relationships with your Members, provide your colleagues with an enjoyable employment experience, and warmly welcome Guests (people trying the gym before they join) to the gym. The rest is administration, which is supremely important, but the level of Manager we're looking for handles standard day-to-day operations with efficiency and consistency automatically.
You are the senior person on site at both gyms: a team of five Coaches, two Assistant Coaches, an Onboarding Specialist (sales), and your Ops Assistant. Jen and I will work with you remotely and will visit as needed throughout the year.
Pay and Schedule
- $70,000 a year base salary, full-time, exempt.
- Quarterly bonus on business performance, $10,500 a year at target: $80,500 total at target.
- Paid time off.
- A 401(k) and discounted access to our health share plan.
- A free Membership at both gyms, a $495-a-month plan.
- Alternating morning and evening shifts across both gyms during the week, and a full day on Saturdays.
If you love seeing people change for the better, enjoy building great relationships, and thrive in creating special moments for others, we'd love to hear from you.
Looking forward to it,
Ray Gillenwater
